About the Item

Navajo handmade sterling silver squash blossom and earrings set with natural untreated Golden Hill turquoise by Navajo silversmith Thomas Francisco. Grade A quality stones set in sterling silver with twisted rope border. 12 stones on double Navajo pearl chain ending with a naja containing an additional 7 stones. Stamped sterling and maker marked. Thomas is a renowned Navajo artisan accomplished in silver work who brings to the community an extraordinary selection of jewelry creations form fine contemporary inlay to keeping Old World style traditional sterling silver settings for his many quality stones. Desert Lavender, or Golden Hill Turquoise is one of the most distinct-looking turquoise pieces out in the turquoise market. Although it has only been introduced in the US around 2018, its undeniable beauty truly stands out! Its light baby blue appearance coupled with light brown to brown, to ‘lavender’ matrixes are quite distinguishable and definitely scene-stealing! The Navajo word for the squash blossom bead literally means “bead that spreads out”. This tri-petal form first appeared about 1880. Scholars believe that this flower motif was introduced by the Spanish as a variation of the pomegranate flower blossom, and the Navajo adapted it as a symbol of their revered squash. Initially the necklaces were rather simple with the tri-petal silver beads interspersed with rather plain beads. In time, stones were added to the blossom beads as demonstrated in our collection. According to the Navajo, the Naja is strictly decorative; however, it has always been held in high regard by the Navajo and other peoples.
