Opal Pendant with Chain, Boulder Opal, Circa 1940s
About the Item
This large Retro-era (circa 1940s) boulder opal and 14K yellow and white gold pendant was entirely hand crafted by a master jeweler to suggest an acorn and is a one-of-a-kind treasure. Click on the pictures to enlarge them and just look: lightning bolts of color crackle through the polished ironstone, dazzling the eye from every angle. The cap and accompanying three leaves have been so skillfully worked by a master goldsmith; note the painstaking Florentine finish of the 14k white gold leaves. From top to bottom the pendant measures 26.11mm and it is 16.45mm wide. The chain is 20".
And what an unusual chain: rectangular segments that look like a stretched-out accordion, punctuated at stations with granulated gold balls. The chain alone is absolutely gorgeous and entirely unique. Whether this chain has always been with this pendant is a mystery: but they were a pair when I acquired them and a pair they shall remain.
I can find no maker's mark. Only what appears to be an extra (tiny) link near the clasp with what appears under the microscope to possibly be an undecipherable maker's mark. But I feel almost certain this piece was made in America. Opals are relatively fragile gems when compared to sapphire or tourmaline, yet this one is in beautiful condition, with only the expected signs of wear. This has quite obviously been a cherished and protected jewel and is it any wonder why?
A gorgeous, rare, unique and mesmerizing pendant that is as beautiful and unique today as the day so many years ago when it was created.

Set within a custom 18k yellow gold frame -that exposes the rear of the opal, so that you can see with your own eyes that this is a solid black opal- and featuring a bail set with a .03ct VS brilliant round diamond.
