About the Item

A large 18K yellow gold Prince Troubetskoy Russian Armorial cigar fob tool medallion created by Maison Arthus Bertrand with Eloi Pernet surgical steel cutting mechanism which includes cigar scissors, file and knife. 1940's This unique 18K gold cigar tool was created for Prince Igor Nikolayevich Troubetskoy (1912-2008) a Russian/French aristocrat and race car driver who was the driver of the first Ferrarri to compete in Grand Prix racing at the Monaco Grand Prix. Together with Count Bruno Sterzi, Prince Igor started Scuderia Inter racing team, the name of which Ferrarri subsequently used for their first Grand Touring car, the Ferrarri 166 Inter. The duo were among Ferrari's first clients, purchasing three Ferrarri 166 S in 1947. The following year, Igor Troubetskoy made headlines when he married Barbara Woolworth Hutton, the American heiress, socialite and philanthropist whom the press dubbed "Poor Little Rich Girl". This fabulous fob bears the Troubetskoy family crest on one side and a pair of portrait profiles on the other, those of Igor and Barbara. It was given to Igor by Barbara as a wedding present. This piece was created by the esteemed Maison Arthus Bertrand, the famed Parisian House specializing in heraldic jewels, medallions and medals. The Maison was chosen to create the Grand Collier de la Légion d'Honneur, reserved for Heads of State in 1953 and over the years, has collaborated with artists such as Philippe Stark, Auguste Bartholdi, Fernand Léger, César, Arman, Niki de Saint-Phalle and Claude and François-Xavier Lalane. The cigar tools were crafted by Eloi Pernet, founded in 1920 and named Meilleur Ouvrier de France in 1925, the company produces creations for renowned houses such as Hermès, Dupont, Vuitton and Dunhill. The House of Troubetskoy, originally of Lithuanian origin played an important role in the early history of Russia. In 1612, Prince Dmitry Timofeievich Troubetskoy and Prince Dmitry Pozharsky successfully defeated the Polish army to liberate Moscow. Prince Dmitry Troubetskoy was asked to take the Tzar's throne, but chose to accept the governorship of Siberia. The current branch of the family descend from Yuriy Troubetskoy who returned to Moscow in the 1660's by invitation of Tzar Alexis Romanov of Russia and married the Princess Irina Galitzina. Members of this illustrious family included notable diplomats, Field Marshalls, statesmen, philosophers, historians, a Decembrist, a senator and artists. Of the latter, Prince Paolo Troubetskoy was a world renown sculptor whom George Bernard Shaw once described as " the most astonishing sculptor of modern times". A fabulous, one-of-a-kind piece for a cigar afficionado, collector of Russian Imperial objects and connoisseur of memorable conversation pieces. This piece also makes a handsome, substantial medallion, a style popularized by Van Cleef & Arpels and Cartier in their Zodiac lines and Bulgari in Monette. The fob chain may be worn as an accent to the pendant or may be easily removed if desired. The medallion is 40mm by 47mm including the bale. The fob chain is 128mm long Weight: 75.2 grams

Rare Etruscan Revival 18K Gold Locket Necklace attr. Eugene Fontenay, Paris 1870
By Eugene Fontenay
Located in New York, NY
Large, stunning granulated antique French Etruscan Revival locket with the original, equally spectacular large chain. The oval locket exquisitely decorated with a technique known as granulation, where a tiny gold bead is individually applied to a surface to form a geometric pattern. Done entirely by hand and requiring a master goldsmith, this technique is thought to have originated in Sumer approximately 5000 years ago. The Etruscans mastered the process in the first millennium B.C and closely guarded its secret, becoming celebrated for creating some of the most beautiful and technically advanced gold jewelry ever made. Condition: This piece is in very good condition retaining the original interior crystal, the hinges work very well and are precisely calibrated to stay open in place when desired. The back of the locket shows normal wear with just the slightest waviness. The chain is in excellent condition. Composed as a pendant locket on its original chain, the oval gold links reeded on the interior and applied chain link on the exterior, the oval locket decorated with twisted wirework circles and fine applied granulation patterns, suspended from a long bale with quatrefoil granulation. Hinged on the side, opening to reveal a hinged glass panel for a personal memento. French assay mark and maker's mark partially obscured Confident attribution to Fontenay based on partial hallmark and similar published examples. References: Wartski for gold enamelled locket on chain necklace, sold archives; DSF for gold enamelled locket pendant of similar workmanship and design. Fontenay pieces retaining the original chain which may be worn on its own are rare and desirable. Eugene Fontenay...
