Renaissance Revival Emerald, Ruby and Pearl Pendant

About the Item

A Renaissance revival emerald, ruby, pearl and enamelled gold pendant, the rectangular-cut emerald estimated to weigh 1.5 carats rub-over set to the centre, flanked with one diamond-set collet on each corner and four pearls, all to an openwork yellow gold surround of scroll design set with an oval cabochon-cut ruby estimated to weigh 0.5 carats, with drape and foliate designed pink, green, white and blue enamel decorations, suspending three natural pearl drops, all surmounted by a pair of enamelled griffins suspended by a detachable pendant loop with enamelled beading decorations, circa 1880, gross weight 18.2 grams, measuring approximately 6 x 3.7cm, accompanied by GCS Report 80239-98 stating that the emerald is of Colombian origin with minor clarity enhancement, the ruby is of Burmese origin with no indications of heating and the pearls are natural of saltwater origin, gross weight 18.2grams. Renaissance Revival enamel pendant in good condition for its age, some enamel defiant. Unmarked tested as 18ct gold. This spectacular and ornate Victorian pendant created in the Renaissance revival style comes from the collection of Bentley & Skinner, the London jewellers by appointment to both Her Majesty the Queen and His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales. Beginning in the mid-nineteenth century, there was a revival in the lush and detailed styles of the Italian Renaissance, in architecture, interior design, and jewellery. This intricate pendant is bursting with both detail and color and reminiscent of high Renaissance architecture. The enamel work is finely done, with depth and shadow detail on the pink swag curtains and shading the faces of the two griffins. A magnificent piece.
