About the Item
This magnificent gold-plated silver cross was made in Italy in the 60s. It is hand sculpted and the gold plated finish highlights the tree trunk design. The finishing touch is given by the black oxidation of the relief.
The gold plated process is a technique that developed during the 19th century but before the gold plated was called double gold. Oxidation results when metal combines with oxygen and produces an oxide or antique finish. This is not tarnish but a coating of oxide such as what results when sterling silver (a copper and silver alloy) is heated and a copper oxide coats the object. It is commonly called oxidized silver but the more correct term would be sulphurized silver.
This sculpted cross is in good used condition, with normal signs of wear commensurate with the age of the jewel.
