About the Item
We found this sterling silver whistle, circa 1876, on a recent trip to London. We love functional jewelry, and this is a sweet example of a dog whistle from the Victorian era. It has a cylindrical form with a half-moon cut out where air escapes the whistle; a small cork ball can be spotted through the cut out, adding to the functionality of the piece. The whistle hangs from a simple bail, and would look ideal clipped into a dog clip and worn as a pendant. The whistle has a nice high pitch and could be used as a dog or safety whistle; it also makes a beautiful and edgy piece of jewelry.
The whistle is marked on the back with the English marks for sterling silver, the date mark “b” for 1876, and the maker’s mark “J.A.” for Joseph Adelman.
It measures 1 “ x 1/4” plus an addition 7 mm bail. It weighs 1.7 grams.
