About the Item
A vintage 9 karat yellow gold raiding viking dragon ship charm pendant. The vessel is beautifully detailed with a large sail, 'wooden' planks, shields on the sides, oars and a fierce dragons head on the stern.
Viking ships were seagoing vessels with a unique structure, which were used in Scandinavia from the Viking Age until the Middle Ages. The boat types were quite varied depending on what the ship was intended for, but they were generally characterized as sleek and flexible boats, with symmetrical ends with a true keel. They are built over clinkers, that is, the overlapping planks riveted together. Some may have had a dragon's head or other round object protruding from the bow and stern due to the design, although this is only inferred from historical sources. Viking ships were used for military purposes as well as for long-distance trade, exploration and colonization.
