About the Item

Rare KPM porcelain figural inkwell depicting a Chinaman in a wonderfully ornate traditional robe of pale apricot decorated in a flowing floral pattern of garlands of peonies, Chinese roses, camellia, hibiscus and lotus, topped with prominent gold decorated collar, reading a thick book with inscribed Chinese characters. The head of the figure acts as the inkwell top. Fully hallmarked on the base KPM with an orb and a cross in red with an impressed letter U. This mark is listed as used from 1832. KPM, Konigliche Porzellan Manufactur, translates to Royal Porcelain Factory. The company produced some of the finest quality porcelain for Royal patrons, diplomatic presentations and luxury porcelain wares. This charming, delightful inkwell, created in the nineteenth century, was likely made during the Royal Brighton Pavilion Regency era when the demand for exotic Eastern designs was at the height of modern fashion. The style is currently seeing a renaissance with the popularity of Bridgerton. Bright, joyful colors, attention to detail and Oriental subjects epitomize the style. The Royal Brighton Pavilion was designed by John Nash and became a favorite of the Prince Regent, later King George IV. It is a Grade 1 listed former Royal residence in the Indo-Saracenic style with Chinese inspired interiors. Excellent condition
