A White Jade Carving of a Horse, Qing Dynasty

About the Item

A resting horse has been carved from white Hetian jade. Its long muscular body rests on four bent legs, and the head is turned around. The mane is embellished with long striated locks, and the wavy tail wraps around the thigh. The entire figure of the horse is composed of smooth, flowing lines. Each of the limbs is marked with an eight pointed star. During the Qianlong period, a revival of ancient art styles emerged. Emperor Qianlong’s passion for jade led him to explore the Hetian region. The texture of Hetian jade resembles the delicate patterns of snow—not the individual snow flakes, but the texture created after water is poured on thick snow. When light is projected onto the jade at a 45-degree angle, the snow-like texture becomes distinctly visible. Horses were a common theme in the 17th century and throughout the Qing Dynasty. Another similar horse was collected by the National Palace Museum in Taipei. See the last image below. Note: Our light source makes some of the russet hues on the horse appear yellow; however, there is no yellow on the horse body, there is russet color on his hairs.
