About the Item

Our 9K Victorian message ring with the word "Mizpah", set on a gold pattern of raised bands, has stylized decorative raised letters in what is called the Algerian font. The Algerian font is a decorative typeface known for its bold look and created by the firm Stephenson, Blake and Co., an early 20th century British type foundry. Setting the letters on a ribbed ground was a clever design choice by the goldsmith to ensure that the letters M-I-Z-P-A-H stood out. The word Mizpah represents a bond between two people separated by an act of war or other forced estrangement. The message comes from a bible quote in the Old Testament book of Genesis and reads "And Mizpah; for he said, the Lord watch between thee and me, when we are absent one from another". Mizpah is the Hebrew word for "Watchtower", a pillar of stones which symbolized the covenant between Jacob and Laban. The ring has significance for both Judaism and Christianity and is often seen on historical headstones. Mizpah rings were often exchanged between two people in the hope of protecting the pair during a period of separation. The ring is a size 7 1/2 and size-able.
