About the Item
Post medieval gold posy ring. A smoothly conforming yellow gold D-shape band, engraved to the interior in italic script 'Love is the bond of peace', approximately 4.7mm in width and 2.4mm thick. Tested yellow gold, approximately 7.81 grams in weight, circa late 17th-early 18th century.
This ring is near identical (apart from the use of an S for a C) to that found on a plain posy ring held by the British Museum (BM accession number: AF:13338) and numerous examples published by Evans (1931: 73-4).
Accompanied by documentation from the Portable Antiquities Scheme stating that this ring was found whilst metal detecting in Hartford, Oxfordshire in 2022. It is recorded with the Portable Antiquities Scheme under reference OXON-FC03F7; and disclaimed under the Treasure Act.

A yellow gold flat band, the exterior engraved around the full circumference with a stylised floral and foliate design and italic inscription 'MIEU EN VOU'’ meaning 'best in/on you', the interior engraved with the same stylised floral and foliate design and italic inscription 'A BON AM' meaning 'for good love', with traces of white enamel throughout, approximately 4.1mm wide. Tested yellow gold, approximately 1.84 grams in weight, circa 15th century.
The inscriptions seen on this ring are reminiscent of the chivalric values and ideals of courtly love which influenced their design and giving in this era.
