About the Item

Antique 18th century georgian ring with mythological scene. Gorgeous piece of art, created in England back in the 18th century, circa 1780 during the British Georgian period. This rare ring was carefully crafted with beautiful mythological motifs in 14 yellow gold and silver and is embellished with a cushion shaped cameo carved from natural blue turquoise surrounded by rose cut diamonds. This ring is very rare due to its state of preservation and its allegorical representation. It is very likely that the turquoise carving is ancient, of Roman origin from the 3rd century AD, which was set in the style of the time in the 18th century. This carving represents a mythological allegory, Venus seated and resting, to the right with her left arm raised and wearing a costume and jewelry closely related to the fashion of the time it was carved. The two cupids may represent Eros and Anteros, both sons of Venus. Surely is an history of love behind this piece. Symbolism Venus is a Roman goddess, whose functions encompass love, beauty, desire, sex, fertility, prosperity, and victory. In Roman mythology, she was the ancestor of the Roman people through her son, Aeneas, who survived the fall of Troy and fled to Italy. Julius Caesar claimed her as his ancestor. Venus was central to many religious festivals, and was revered in Roman religion under numerous cult titles. The Romans adapted the myths and iconography of her Greek counterpart Aphrodite for Roman art and Latin literature. In the later classical tradition of the West, Venus became one of the most widely referenced deities of Greco-Roman mythology as the embodiment of love and sexuality. In another allegory, Cupid's mother, Venus (Aphrodite), became so jealous of the beautiful mortal Psyche that she told her son to induce Psyche to fall in love with a monster. Instead, Cupid became so enamored with Psyche that he married her—with the condition that she could never see his face. Georgian Jewelry is a term that refers to an era in English history during the reigns of King George I to King George IV, from 1714 to 1837. Like the term Victorian (used for jewelry during Queen Victoria's rule), it is accepted in use as a term that refers to certain styles of jewelry. Pearls, sapphires, rubies and garnets were widely used in Georgian jewellery, often cut in the shape of a cabochon or teardrop. Rubies and pearls were a fashionable combination at the time. Some of our collection of Georgian gemstone rings. Popular cuts for diamonds included 'rose cut', 'old mine cut' and 'table cut. Collateral: It is accompanied by a presentation jewelry box.
