About the Item

A fine antique red spinel and diamond ring in 18k yellow gold, early Victorian, ca. 1860s. The centre gemstone is an antique cushion cut spinel - not heated - accompanied by a gemological report. The spinel weighs 2.41 carats and has a vivid red colour and exceptional crystal. It is surrounded by old cut diamonds. The ring head is further accentuated by two smaller old cut diamonds on either side. The total diamond weight is approximately 2.6 carats. The ring has rubbed marks. Ring size 49 (US ring size 5), can be customised as required. Spinels have been used in jewelry since ancient times, however this gemstone has only recently received its own identification. Prior to the technological advancement in gemology, around the turn of the century, it was believed that spinel and ruby were the same stone, as they were found in the same mine. Therefore many historic gemstones, which were thought to be rubies, turned out to be spinels, such as the Black Prince’s ruby or Timur ruby. The spinel in this antique ring has a striking and deep red colour and could well have been part as a ruby in a historically important jewellery collection.
