Exquisite Engraved Gold Medieval Posy Ring c. 1400 – 1450

About the Item

Circa 1400 – 1450 This exceptionally rare medieval posy ring is crafted in high-karat gold (approximately 22.25 Kt) and exemplifies the fine goldwork of the late Middle Ages. The exterior of the band is intricately engraved with alternating crosses pattée, stylized flower heads, and foliate motifs, creating a rhythmic and symbolic decorative scheme reflective of both faith and courtly love. On the interior, a deeply personal message is engraved in elaborate Blackletter (Gothic) script, a hallmark of the period’s aesthetic. The Old French inscription reads: “CERT MON VIE” — which may be translated as “Certainly [you are] my life”, or more loosely, “Surely, my life” / “You are truly my life.” Such tender inscriptions were typical of posy rings, exchanged as intimate gifts between lovers or as devotional pledges. The use of French, the language of courtly refinement and aristocratic culture in medieval Europe, underscores the sophistication and emotional depth of the piece. Weight is 2.64 grams Width of the band is 4 mm (1/8 in.) Ring size 8.5 (18 mm)
