About the Item

A cushion-shaped, mixed-cut, eye-clean 4.04 unheated royal blue sapphire from Madagascar is the discussion here. The included AGL "Prestige Gemstone Report" concludes that the sapphire has an origin of Madagascar, no "clarity enhancement," and no indications of heating. For many, this Royal blue is the ideal tone for a sapphire. It is the same regal blue seen on the finger of the Princess of Wales. Unheated sapphires with an interior as clean as this stone, and with such a fine, even tone are exceedingly rare and highly valuable. As I write these words in the early days of 2024, A heated sapphire of 4.09 carats with a Sri Lanka origin is currently being offered for sale at a natural sapphire company for $20,000. Blue sapphires from Mozambique are significantly more desirable. This same seller offers a 3-carat unheated blue Madagascar-origin sapphire that has visible inclusions this stone lacks, and they have priced it at $30,000. For centuries, blue sapphires have been found in primarily three locations: Burma (Myanmar), Kashmir (India), and Sri Lanka (Ceylon). While sapphires with a Kashmir origin are still found and sold today, only the Kashmir sapphires from the original find in the early 1880s possess the unique "sleepy" quality these fine blue stones are so famous for. Burmese sapphires often most resemble those from Sri Lanka (Ceylon), which has been the primary source of sapphires for centuries. Gem labs sometimes find it challenging to tell accurately pinpoint the origin of a blue sapphire because stones from the three locations may appear very similar. Then in the early 1990s everything changed. Blue sapphires of extraordinary -Kashmir quality- were discovered in Madagascar. Today, it is the primary source for the finest blue sapphires in the world. This magnificent stone resides within a setting that I personally feel is unremarkable. My main issue with the mounting is that the back is closed. While it's true that the cut of the gem reflects the light outwards, I like an open-back on a faceted stone because I just think it brightens it up. The mounting is 14K rose gold and features 32 tapered baguette diamonds -nice ones- that weigh about .50 carts. It's a perfectly fine mounting, but that's all it is. I have priced the sapphire as a loose stone; with a discount that allows you to have a custom mounting created by your own jeweler. The sapphire measures 10.20mm x 8.81mm x 5.26mm and the ring itself rises 7.72mm from the surface of the finger. The ring is in unworn condition. It is currently a size 4 ¾ but your jeweler could resize it for you. Do some research and on no-heat Madagascar blue sapphires of this size and clarity, and overall quality. And you'll appreciate what a bargain this actually is. This ring ships with the AGL Prestige Gemstone Report spoken about above.
