Spectacular Substantial Art Nouveau Diamond 14K Yellow Gold Double Snake Ring
About the Item
Beautiful large scale antique Art Nouveau period double serpent diamond and 14K yellow gold ring.
Late 19th Century
The two snakes artfully, intricately coiled to form a striking double snake ring.
Old European cut diamonds with a desirable open back setting, measuring approximately .85 TCW.
Condition: Very good, lovely soft patina
Diamonds: G-H, VVS, Old European cut, .85 TCW
Marks: 14 on the inside of band for 14K gold.
Size 11 1/2 US
The snake ring is an ancient symbol and metaphor of eternal love. It was especially popular during the Ptolemaic and Roman periods. Serpentine imagery was both ornamental and amuletic, as the snake was invoked to protect the wearer from harm. In one of the great romances of the nineteenth century, a snake ring was chosen by Prince Albert in 1840 for an engagement ring for Queen Victoria.
