About the Item

How can you not love this French Art Nouveau Flower Sprig Crossover Ring set with a .15 carat cushion cut diamond and a natural pearl plus six small rose diamonds in the stem. The ring tests 18ct gold with a platinum top and was made circa 1900-1910. It has French marks (known as "poncoin") and makers mark M.D. next to a diamond cartouche with what appears to be a pictorial castle in between the initials L and T. Notice the lovely delicate gold work on the open back. There was an unusual amount of hand work in this ring for the post Industrial period in which it was made. The number 1730 hand engraved in the gold we believe was the pattern number from the jeweler's drawings. Crossover rings became popular at the very end of the 19th century and continued into the the 20th century. This crossover ring follows the basic design of the original but is more stylized as Europe embraced the new decorative arts from, Art Nouveau. A drawing of the original design of the crossover ring, dated 1896, is shown in the photos. These designs were from EW Streeter, a jeweler on New Bond Street in London. At 8.25 US ring size our ring can accommodate quite a large finger, but the scale is such that this ring would suit someone with smaller hands and fingers best.
