Byzantine Gold Intaglio Ring with Niello Inlay
About the Item
A remarkable and finely crafted Byzantine 22kt gold ring featuring a raised circular bezel with an intaglio engraving of a bird and a lizard or salamander—creatures rich in early Christian symbolism. The central boss is set atop stepped plinths, adorned with zig-zag and Greek key motifs, all inlaid with deep black niello enamel.
The triangular shoulders are engraved with acanthus leaves in niello, and the chevron-profile shank is decorated with continuous Vitruvian scroll guards. On either side of the bezel are incised Greek inscriptions: ΑΡΕΤΗ (Arete – "Virtue") and ΣΩΦΡΟΣΥΝΗ (Sophrosyne – "Temperance" or "Self-restraint")—core values in classical and Byzantine philosophy.
