About the Item

This exquisite vividly colored opal is known as a Black Opal or “Peacock Feather” opal from Lightening Ridge, Australia. This single stone is totally natural and untreated and size 6 1/2 but easily sizable. We date it to 1910. With a plethora of different colors and textures available, the opal, comes in every color of the rainbow. Australia is the heart of the world’s opal mining industry, home to 97% of the different types and are the largest provider of opals to the world. Australia boasts the most diverse and high quality range of opal, with every color of the visible spectrum, from the deepest and clearest blues and greens to rich pinks, vermilion and fuchsia to bright oranges and soft violets, every color you can imagine! The value and quality of an opal depends on many factors, including the body tone, brilliance, pattern, number of colors and unique faults. Other important factors are the quality of the cut & polish, and the size of the stone. The Australian Black Opal is one of the rarest and highly sought after gemstones. Black opals come in every colo r of the rainbow, and their dark body tone complements these colors to appear even richer and more intense. There may be some reflections on the photos caused by our light box; however the ring has no dark spots or imperfections.

Victorian Jewelry This era was one of the most influenced and influential periods of antique jewelry. This period is defined by the British monarch, in this case, Alexandrina Victoria, the Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, as well as the Empress of India, years 1837-1901. There are 3 sub-periods within this era. First, the early, Romantic period, which is soaked in traditions, natural motifs in gold and silver, clear stones only being worn during the day and colored gems by night. The second being the Grand or mourning period, which coincides with the death of Queen Victoria's husband, Prince Albert the consort, who died in December of 1861. This period included large, dark, somber, dramatic jewelry, with a lot of black onyx, jet wood, amethyst, garnet and gold. This lasted until 1880's, when the aesthetic period of jewelry began. The Late or third stage of the Victorian period, use more complex and feminine motifs, returning to the natural, including many floral and celestial designs, with more decadent gemstones, lasting until the turn of the century. The Victorian era of jewelry includes many movements found in other countries, including revivals such as the Etruscan the Roman and the Egyptian as well as the Art Nouveau, Liberty style and Arts and Crafts design movements which lead into the beginning of the twentieth century. Opal Opal is one of the world's most popular gemstones and the birthstone for the month of October. A nice precious opal can flash every color of the spectrum with an intensity and quality of color that surpasses the fire of diamond. The best opals command prices per carat that rival expensive diamonds...
