Poetry in Stone, an Antique Italian Cameo
About the Item
We were told but cannot yet confirm that the refined image is likely a poet. Certainly this was a familiar historic image to the people in Victorian Europe. Any comments are welcome. The ring is poetry aplenty.The hand made setting is handsome. Cameo carving was an Italian art form for hundreds of years and images of mythical and historic figures multiplied in the 19th century largely due to the Grand Tour of Europe. Banded agate, a hard stone of black with white here and there, was carved so that the white portion rises above the black with this magnificently detailed profile. Male and female friendly. Enlarge the image and you will be in awe of the fine stone carving and gold work . Condition is perfect. The gold is 18k. Size 6 1/2 with a beautiful generous shank that can be enlarged. The shank has a beautiful columnar construction at the shoulders putting the cameo on somewhat of a pedestal.
The measurements of the face are as follows: cameo raised from far,e os 7/8 of an inch north to south, width 5/8ths.
The total with frame of gold is 1 inch north to south by 6/8 width. The frame curves down allowing the cameo to rise and adds a touch to the measurements but a great deal to the statement.
