Antique Georgian Enamel Gold Memorial Ring Symbolizes Remember Me
About the Item
An 18th century ring of spectacular design in an elongated oval form displays a bow of white hair tied with gold thread placed under its crystal. The crystal frame is gold framed by white enamel. Outstanding is the next oval of strong blue enamel dotted with gold followed by narrow gold surround echoing the dots. All this is packaged in an 15 kt gold setting. The significance of memory is the important genre here underscored by the engraving on the reverse is the bow. A bow was tied around the finger or wrist to prompt a memory. In this ring it symbolizes remember me or think of me. This is a rare and beautiful example of a memento mori from the era in which a death was honored and the loved one was kept close at hand.
