Georgian Diamond Enameled Urn Mourning Hair Locket Ring

About the Item

This exceptional memorial urn ring from the Georgian era (ca1779) is quite an unusual piece! Crafted in 18kt rose gold, the ring is richly detailed, and serves as a fine example of the mourning jewelry tradition. Set atop a wide but flat rose gold band is a circular centerpiece which wraps around the finger, following the curvature of the ring. The plaque centerpiece displays an incredible raised urn image which adorns rich, black enameling and fine old Mine and Rose Cut diamonds which are set along the center, bottom and top. The surface of the round plaque is covered in bright white enameling while a dramatic black border frames the stunning design. The urn is realistically portrayed and the 3-dimensional appearance accentuates the elegant look of the piece. A hidden glass-covered compartment can be found along the back of the urn, exposing a small lock of hair, the keepsake of a lost loved one. The disguised compartment feature of the ring is not immediately evident due to its seamless design, making it a subtle and secretive feature! Completing the design is a smooth wide band, which graduates in width towards the back. A hand engraved inscription along the shank reads: "Eliz Rotton ob 9 April 1797 ce 71." An exceptional antique mourning ring, it is rich in history and would be perfect for the serious Georgian jewelry collector! The ring has a finger size 8, but could possibly be resized slightly. Please inquire prior to purchase as significant sizing is not recommended, to preserve the condition of the piece and integrity of the design. The round urn plaque at the center measures 3/4" in diameter. The gold band graduates in width and measures 10mm wide at the shoulders and 4mm at the back.

Victorian 18k Banded Agate, Pearl + Enamel Mourning Locket
Located in Narberth, PA
This rare mourning locket from the Victorian (ca1875) era is quite a stunning piece! Crafted in vibrant 18k gold, the decorative locket serves as an incredible example of the mourning jewelry tradition. A delicate white pearl is pin-set in a gold 8-pointed star; a classic Victorian motif. The pearl and star rest in the center of a bezel-set piece of banded agate, surrounded by a gold twisted rope-like border around the bezel. The agate and pearl are encompassed by a broad gold boarder heavily adorned with black enamel. The enamel script reads "In memory of" on the four points of the cross. In between the points of the cross, gorgeously enameled flower-like shapes fill in the negative space. The outer edges of the locket also feature spoked gold-shot detail. The locket also boasts an over-sized bail that features the same floral enamel styling that can be seen throughout. The backside of this piece features a single large compartment with a removable glass face with gold frame that likely once held a photo or memento of the deceased. Engraved above the top of the compartment reads "George May, Died 6...
