The neoclassical carving depicts Hercules, a mythological figure widespread in Greek and Roman culture, fighting against the Nemean lion, while completing the first of the twelve labors that the hero was forced to perform to atone for the guilt of having killed his family in a moment of madness caused to him by the goddess Hera. The hero is depicted with his muscles tense from the effort, while the feline lashes out at him. Note the quality of the engraving that allows an effective reading of the carving, in which you can see the anatomical details of both Hercules and the Nemean lion, thanks to the fact that they are worked on different thicknesses. It is a neoclassicist carving, certainly taken from antiquity, however, it can be compared to the area of Pichler's production, who certainly made a carving with the same subject, defined by ancient sources as taken "from an ancient gem"; the subject of Hercules and Nemea, however, was also taken up by Calandrelli with minimal variations. The carvings by Pichler and Calandrelli were most likely taken from an ancient Nicolò that belonged to the Jenkins collection, and later found in the Poniatowski collection, of which there is also an engraved print by Thomas Worlidge from 1757 (London British Museum, Dep. Prints and drawings no. 1859.0709.889).
