The magnificent emerald-green jade stone has a beautiful antique polish that was created without the use of electricity or modern polishing aids like diamond paste. Many older jade stones are re-polished to give them that mirror-shine but I think the old stones are perfect exactly as they are. This is a brilliant, luminous cabochon of jade in the finest color and with superb translucency. Remember those onion-skin-thin metal rings with adjustable bands you could get for a quarter from the gumball machine there against the wall as you walked into the grocery store with your mom on Saturday. morning? This is not that ring. The notion of an "adjustable ring" does not exactly suggest fine jewelry. But it's an entirely different story when the adjustable band is thick, high-karat gold. Here, the heavy gold stays where you put it. Sure, the ring is technically adjustable but don't think this ring is going to bend out of shape when you slide it onto your finger. It's impeccably crafted and the shoulders feature richly carved toothy dragons on either side. The interior of the band is marked for metal fineness and bears a maker's mark. A rich, succulent highly-translucent, and gemmy deep apple green jade cabochon resides within its bezel and is guarded on either side by a pair of exotic, whimsical creatures from the sea. The detailing created by the master goldsmith is outstanding. A machine didn't come within 50 paces of this ring: it was created entirely by hand. The gold sheet was cut by hand, the raised-relief dragon sculpted and applied by hand, then the band was textured to reflect the sea creatures scales. It's no wonder the ring required a pair of sea creatures to guard the jade instead of just one because what an extraordinary cabochon of jade this is. Measuring 13.2mm north to south and 9.2mm west to east, it's a nicely-sized stone with tremendous inner texture and very high translucency. You can see in the images that when the ring is in shadow, the jade becomes darker, more "imperial" in coloring. Blasted with light, it's bright apple green. It's a very fine piece of jade in a whimsical, creative hand-made setting. I believe the ring dates from the 1970s though it could be later. The ring is in exceedingly fine condition with no dents, damage or repairs. I purchased this ring from a jade collector so it's quite possible that it's never been worn. The 18K gold isn't quite red enough to be "rose" gold and it's not quite yellow enough to be ordinary yellow gold. It's ginger gold...
