18th Century Late Safavid Dynasty 22k Carnelian Islamic Intaglio Signet Ring

This superb Islamic gold ring dates to the the mid-18th century, circa 1760. It is set with an octagonal flat cut carnelian intaglio with bevelled edges. The stone is engraved with decorative Nastalīq calligraphy featuring stylised dots and stars, typical of the period. The heavy gold ring is unmarked but tests as 22 karats.
Four similar dated carnelian seals can be found published in Porter’s ‘Arabic Seals and Amulets from the British Museum’ (2011). All four seals display very similar characteristics, namely a lined border, cursive Nastalīq calligraphy and the aforementioned stylised decorative features including stars, dots and arrows; these seals are all dated between 1758-1765. The imposing shape is very typical of Safavid dynasty rings which are engraved with “simple geometric designs along the edges of the bezels” and the bezel shape being an “inverted cone worn fairly high off the finger” (Content, 1987). These types of rings were popular from the 15th to the third quarter of the 18th centuries.
In addition to the inverted cone-shaped bezel and engraved ornamentation around the edges, this ring also has beaded gold granules on the shoulders. A similar published example with all of these features can be found in ‘Islamic Rings...
