About the Item

An Edwardian yellow gold buckle ring, comprising a yellow gold band in the form of a belt or a buckle, in 18 karat yellow gold. This beautiful Edwardian ring is formed in the shape of a buckle or belt. This motif would have been known as a ‘garter’ in the Edwardian era, and symbolised love, commitment, and fidelity. Often, rings such as these would have been given as a symbol of love and commitment and were used as a wedding rings. This ring has been used to memorialise a WW1 solider, who died in the course of action. Mourning rings had gone out of fashion by this time, and this would have been a discreet and sentimental way of remembering a lost loved one. The chunky ring is wonderfully tactile, with the details of the buckle still crisp. The ring is in excellent condition. Wear and tear acquiescent with age. The front of the band measures 11.2mm wide, and measures 5.9mm wide at the back. Gross weight: 7.03g Ring size: UK – P US – 7.75 EU – 56.25 mm, due to the width of the band the ring fits like a UK – N.5 US – 7 EU – 54.5 mm Hallmarks: ‘18’ (18 karat gold), shield for Chester assay office, date letter ‘S’ for 1918, inscribed “Stuart Cooil. Killed in action Sept 10,, 1918”

Antique Victorian 9K Yellow Gold Oval Engraved Locket Ring
Located in Staines-Upon-Thames, GB
An antique yellow gold ring, comprising one oval shaped locket compartment, in 9 karat yellow gold, to a band of 9 karat yellow gold. This amazing ring is set to the centre with an oval shaped head, which is beautifully tactile, like a smooth pebble. The oval is beautifully engraved to one side with a heart motif, and elegant scrolls. The engraved panel opens on a hinge, revealing a secret locket compartment. Rings like this were popular in the Victorian era and are often referred to as ‘poison’ rings. They are rare pieces, and are not often found, let alone in wearable condition. Photographs or small mementos could be placed within the locket, the heart shaped engraving would suggest this ring had a sentimental purpose, you can feel the love associated with it, when you wear this ring. The shoulders lead to a carved band of polished yellow gold. The locket snaps shut securely, and it does rattle slightly as is common with rings like these, but the hinge is still strong. The ring is in good condition, with a tiny ding to the underside of the locket compartment. This ding does not affect wearability and cannot be seen when worn. Wear and tear acquiescent with age. The head of the ring measures 10.7mm high, and 13.2mm wide. The band measures 2.7mm wide at the back. Gross weight: 1.68g Ring size: approximately a UK – K US – 5.25 EU – 50 with some leeway either side, due to the shape of the back of the ring Hallmarks: 9.375 (9 karat gold), shield for Chester assay, date letter ‘N’ for 1896, makers mark “GKL”, likely for George K...
