About the Item

This rare Iberian bow form has 1.6 carats of natural Colombian emeralds and a wonderful bow form; bows were popularized in the 17th century when traditionally seen as a symbol of love and marriage, the bow motif first appeared in jewelry in the 17th century France in the court of Louis the XIV and continued in popularity throughout Europe. Bow themed jewels were seen in the gowns worn during the period and in the form of be-jeweled brooches and finger rings. The combination of high karat gold with emeralds is a well-known color palette associated with 17th and 18th century Iberian jewelry from The Spanish Peninsula. Starting in the 16th century, Spanish overseas trading brought Spanish & Portuguese Jewelers an abundance of raw materials: gold and emeralds from Colombia, coral and pearls from Central and South America, silver from Mexico and Bolivia, rubies from Southeast Asia and other precious gems from Brazil and India. The emerald mines in Colombia, Brazil and Peru were very rich by the 17th century, the best of Spanish jewelry was associated with the use of Colombian emeralds. The emeralds are known as table cuts, where lapidaries sliced off the top of the emerald to produce a flat gem cut which is unfortunately not listed in this platform's algorithm of gem cuts. We love the look of early table cut gems. Also noteworthy is the rough textured baroque repousse work at the underside of the ring which surrounds the carved flower ray at the back and adds to the beautiful details of this ring. The tiny bolt at the center of the underside is a typical construction of the period. This ring is a masterpiece in miniature.
