Crafted from two individual gold bands, these coiled serpents lock together to form a beautiful intertwined double snake ring. Intricate and unusual in design, this ring crafted was a challenging commission. The eyes are set with rubies, the tongue slightly poking out from the mouth and the top of the head is set with sapphires and chrysoberyl. The tail of the serpent is lavishly decorated with alternating rubies and emeralds in open-back rubover settings and the band is crafted in 21K gold. The Indian subcontinent is home to several deadly, poisonous snakes, including the cobra. Death due to snakebite was the most common cause of death in India until recent times. Unsurprisingly, ancient Indians both feared and revered snakes and this tradition still continues today. Hindus worship snakes in temples as well as in their natural habitats, offering them milk, incense, and prayers. Animal worship has always been a key aspect of Hindu worship, with devotees often relating them directly with their deities. Associated with gods such as Shiva, Vishnu and Subramanya, snakes, known as “naga” or “nagin,” have been an important part of Indian mythology for centuries and play prominent roles in several legends.
