Peter Delius Crystalline Exaggerated Flagon Ale Pitcher Form Postmodern Bauhaus
By Peter Delius
Located in Mobile, AL
The Delius family are well known and famous for Bauhaus designs at Hamelner Töpferei from 1933-1966. Second generation Peter Delius opened his own pottery and focused on personally made studio work in the ensuing years. This exaggerated form is clearly the perfect surface for an astounding crystalline glaze as it breaks pools and crystals gradually grow larger down the surface and across the swell of the body. And, the mass, the swell and the handle... are exaggerated. Clearly aware of the design ethos of the 1980's while remaining distinctly Germanic. Thin elegant utilitarian versions of this form and handle (without the exaggeration) date all the way back to the beginnings of the family Bauhaus origins. But, this functions as a wink and a nod to it's function (much like the 2 and 3' tall German steins...

Large 19th Century French Pot de Confit or Confit Pot with Greenish Yellow Glaze
Located in Birmingham, AL
A fantastic 19th century French pot de confit or confit pot from southwest France having two handles and a greenish yellow glaze with a yellow interior glaze, circa 1870s. Utilitarian earthenware vessels like this one were a staple in French kitchens, especially in the South of France where the weather was warmer. The word confit means “to preserve," and these charming pots made it possible to cook different types of foul and preserve the meat in its own fat. French confit pots are easily recognizable because of their beautiful glazed upper sections and unglazed bottoms. The bottom half of the pot was left unglazed because it would be buried in the cool soil of the cellar or placed in a stone lined larder up to the glazing line. This storage process preserved the cooked meat before refrigeration so it could then be enjoyed throughout the winter months. This large confit pot...
