This body of new work is a meditation on the arrangement and importance of simple objects in space and time. For me, as an artist, light is how I describe the passage of time. Light takes the viewer's eye into and out of the composition. Light against light, light against dark, morning light - my vocabulary of illumination is inspired by the old masters. Light against dark becomes an acknowledgement of vanitas and Dutch Golden Age, as tulips seem to dance against the sure knowledge their petals will soon drop. Close up, the blue hydrangea with its veined and sturdy leaves, is a tribute to Maria van Oosterwyck and Rachel Ruysch, two 17th century Dutch women who led the world in botanical art. A birdseye view of a simple blue and white dish of cherries against a dark background becomes a still life suspended in time - the viewpoint modern, but the subject matter timeless. Olives. Persimmons. Mushrooms. Figs. The watercolors celebrate bounty and were directly influenced by 18th century still life painter Luis Meléndez, a master of composition and light.
