Italian Empire style dining table, 20th c., having oval marble top, with molded wood edge, rising on large pedestal base, some surface wear to wood edge, approx 31.75"h, 77"w, 39"d Empire style is an early 19th-century design movement originating in France. The Empire got its name from the crowning of Napoleon Bonaparte I, emperor of the First French Empire. The ancient empires of Egypt, Greece, and Rome influenced Napoleon, who often compared himself with Emperor Augustus. Hence, the Empire furniture copied everything from these ancient empires. The style was an evolution of Neoclassical design. Thus, the form shunned the curves and gave way to symmetry and geometrical shapes. These were supplemented with the emblem of Napoleon's Empire, the bee; Egyptian motifs; and military trophies. Pedestal tables with claw feet and boat beds were in vogue. The wood of choice was mahogany, solid or veneer, and ormolu was the chief embellishment according to Worth Point...
