“The Model” by Charles Shepard Chapman
Located in Sheffield, MA
Born in Morristown, New York, Charles Chapman was a noted teacher, painter, and illustrator who was educated at Pratt Institute High School and in 1899 at William Merritt Chase's Art School in New York City. He also attended the Ogdensburg Free Academy and was highly influenced by the famed western artist Frederic Remington. Chapman was elected to the Council of the National Academy of Design in 1926. He was a member of the Salmagundi Club and won all its major prizes. As a member of the National Academy of Design his awards included the Saltus Gold Medal and the National Academy of Design, First Shaw Prize. His painting, "In The Deep Woods" is at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. He became an instructor at the Art Students League in New York and was also a book illustrator. With Harvey Dunn, he opened a school of illustration in Leonia, New Jersey. Chapman worked as an illustrator, but was best known for paintings of wilderness landscapes of the northern and western United States. Chapman painted the background for the mountain lion diorama in the American Museum's Hall of North American Mammals, which features the Grand Canyon. The subject shows many of the great qualities that William Merrit Chase instilled onto his students. Chase’s paintings in his 10th street studio in the late 1880’s were where some of his best paintings were completed. All major collectors of Chase are continuously seeking works of that period. Many of the women in Chase’s paintings of the 1880’s showed this great Western European fascination with Japanese culture as well as Chase’s love for decorative effect such works as Japanese in a Kimono, circa 1890 (Brooklyn Museum), of which the model wears the blue-gray kimono seen in “Woman in Kimono Holding a Japanese Fan”. This painting by Chapman...
