Fred Deux
Fred Deux, illustrator, oral poet, writer, and, under the pseudonym Jean Douassot, author of a cult book, La Gana, was a singular artist who cannot be categorised in terms of art fashions and trends. This autodidact, born in the basement of a large house in Boulogne-Billancourt to a working-class family, constantly had to overcome, as he would say. “He had to overcome”: overcome the basement walls to access the life which called him and burnt inside him. Overcome the barriers between the arts, moving from drawing to the written word, and from the page to the tape recorder, in the face of which he recounted stories to himself in a sort of endless reverie, constantly exploring the unknown in him. Overcoming and being overcome: gradually immersing himself in drawing, so that it was life itself which overcame him and surrendered to him.
Timeline
1924
Born in Boulogne-Billancourt, Paris. The Deux family lived in the basement of a building close to the Seine that was often flooded. These living conditions formed the biographical core around in which the artist would develop his work as a future writer and artist.
1942
Deux worked in a factory as an electrician and night guard.
1943
Deux becomes part of the FTP group to resist against the factory. And then joined the Maquis du Doubs.
1945
At the liberation, Deux joined the Moroccan Goumier, and took part of the campaigns of Vosges, Alsace and Germany.
1947
Returned to France. Installation in Marseille. Worked in an important library that belonged to the family of his wife.
1948
Discovered Breton, Bataille, Cendrars, Peret, Sade... and founded the sub-group of Surrealists in Marseille and formed a link with the literary magazine of Marseille, Cahiers du Sud
Encounters the works of Paul Klee.
He begins creating his first stains with paint for bicycle and impressions (fabric and ink). At the same time, he begins to take notes for what would become "Les Rats", first version of "La Gana".

Antique halberds etching inspired in Venice by Italian leader in printmaker
By Federica Galli
Located in Milan, IT
Le alabarde,
Ref. 499
Original etching, signed and numbered. Limited edition of 90.
Federica Galli was one of Italy's leading contemporary etchers.
She achieved this fame because she was able to interpret views, as Milan and Venice, landscapes and architecture with a poetic and original eye.
Moreover she had the foresight to portray the beauty of the great Italian trees with a cycle of sixty different platemarks.
In 2021, Milan named a new street after her.
Her etchings are in prestigious museums in Europe and America, as well as in many private collections.
Her work is protected by a foundation with her name, based in Milan.
The etching was exhibited last year in the critical retrospective that the city of Milan promoted and set up to mark the tenth anniversary of her death. Milan's municipality has named a new street to her for the occasion.
The many international and accredited critics who have lingered to appreciate Galli's etchings remark on her ability to combine poetry, architectural precision and interpretative originality.
Federica Galli has always been able to take a fresh look at all the landscapes and architecture on which she has cast her gaze.
NMWA (National Museum of Women in Arts) in Washington conserved the complete Venezia portfolio. Also, her oeuvres are in significant Italian museum collections such as the Pinacoteca Ambrosiana, (the same museum where Leonardo's Codex is conserved) and Museo of Castello Sforzesco, both in Milan; di Milano, Ala Ponzone in Cremona.
Federica Galli's Biography
Proudly present into Google art and Culture
A prominent figure in the art of engraving in Italy, Federica Galli was born in 1932 in Soresina - a village just outside Cremona- in the north of the country.
Straight after the war, in 1946, she convinced her parents to enrol her at the Artistic Lyceum in Milan. In 1950, she attended the Academy of Fine Arts of Brera, from where she graduated four years later with a diploma in painting.
She began engraving in 1954 - "Il paese dell'Alberta"- experimenting with etching, a technique she never abandoned for the rest of her life. In 1966 she married the journalist Giovanni Raimondi – editor-in-chief of the Corriere della Sera. During that time she began to embark on a densely packed programme of cultural trips that took her to the most important European cities and to countries where the art of engraving is less deeply rooted. These were also the year in which she matured the conviction that engraving was the technique in which she expressed herself most effectively and started to apply herself exclusively to this art form, producing over eight hundred different subjects.
Starting from her early personal exhibitions – the first one took place in 1960 in Milan – she met with the favour of the public and critics alike. In the space of a few years, she could count on the support of some of the most authoritative critics of her time: Franco Russoli, Mario de Micheli, Giovanni Testori – who was to follow her closely until he died - Mina Gregori, Gian Alberto dell'Acqua, Roberto Tassi, Renzo Zorzi, Carlo Bo, Daniel Berger (Metropolitan Museum of New York), Gina Lagorio, Giuseppe and Francesco Frangi, Marco Fragonara, Giorgio Soavi and David Landau (Oxford University).
She obtained the most prestigious institutional acknowledgements given to any contemporary artist: she was the first living artist to be invited to exhibit at the Fondazione Cini in Venice - 1987 with a collection dedicated to the lagoon city - ; at the Civic Museum of Palazzo Te in Mantua - 1987 -; at the Castello Sforzesco in Milan - 1988 - ; in the Imperial Archive of the Forbid-den City, Wag Fung gallery, - 1995 -.
Collectors of her works include people of culture from Italy and elsewhere, individuals are known for their cultivated passion for the graphic arts, comprising – just to mention some of the most famous: Dino Buzzati...

Chas LABORDE
Charles Laborde was born in Buenos Aires on August 8, 1886. He was the youngest of the five sons of Adolphe-Sylvestre Laborde-Pinou, a Basque-Bearne millionaire who had made a fortune selling spirits to the Indians and luxury goods imported from France to wealthy Argentines. The family returned to France when Charles was six months old. His mother died when he was two. He spent his childhood at their family château d’Escout outside Oloron-Sainte-Marie in the Pyrenees. His brothers went to a boarding-school, his father was often in Paris on business, and little Charles was left to his devices. Though it was a lonely childhood, he was a darling of his generous and magnanimous father. Charles got his early drawing skills from a village artist and found support in his brother Jean-Felix. Charles frequently accompanied his father visiting artisans and helped him choose de luxe objects to be sold in Argentine.
He first attended the Rollin college in Paris, then a lyceum in Pau, where he lived with full board and lodging after his father’s death in 1901. From childhood Charles wanted to be an artist and tried several pseudonyms for himself: Ch. Laborde, Carlos Laborde,Carlos Edrobal and Carl Lab. He started wearing a velvet suit and a large hat. At 17, the timid shortsighted teenager wearing big glasses was expelled from college for smoking and drinking alcohol and went to Paris into the custody of his elder brother Jean-Felix, who carried on his father’s business. Charles enrolled in the prestigious l’Académie Julian, studying under Henri Royer and Marcel Baschet. Simultaneously he was a pupil of William Bouguereau and Luc-Olivier Merson at l’École des Beaux-Arts. The latter was famous for being the designer of the 50 and 100 franc banknotes, and he believed that he was teaching a “little Daumier”.
In England, where he went every year from 1905 to 1914 with the family of his friend Cooper, a classmate at l’Académie Julian, he found not only his pseudonym Chas (short for Charley), but also the land of his dreams. Peculiarities of London and its inhabitants were reflected in drawings of William Hogarth and Thomas Rowlandson, whose album The Microcosm of London (1808) prompted Charles to make his London Streets Scenes (1928). Owing to those trips Charles took a liking to the atmosphere of England and its reserved and terse humor.
In 1905 the château d’Escout and the Buenos Aires Commercial Fund were sold. After coming into inheritance, Laborde became financially independent and obtained an atelier in Montmartre at 11 bis Rue des Saules. His neighbors were de la Butte, Francis Carco and Pierre Mac Orlan, who sympathized with the easy-going young man with a positive attitude to life. His friend Pierre Falke...
