Multiple layers of paint in various colors from teal blue, pink, beige, and orange are peeled and cracked creating an abstract pattern of color behind the landscape painting in this photograph. Time and age have created an image of beautiful decay with the cracked and peeling paint, which creates an amazing visual backdrop to the painting. The pairing of the two in this photograph compliment each other on a sensory level and bring out thoughts of nostalgia and longing.

The rose pink textured wall of the distressed background in this photograph complements pinkish reds of the road depicted in the rural town landscape painting, which was selected and placed by the artist to have this interaction. The red tones in horizontal stripes of the exposed wood lathing strips on the wall that the painting is hung, add to the visual texture with the white paint under the peeling pink paint. The video shows close up of the salt crystals listening off the paper as a visual texture in the pictures
The layering of works, creating depth, process and nature are important elements of the artist' work . For example, salt crystallization has been used on found objects and encrusted on photo based works on paper. The salt crystallization process is similar to preserving some objects, while disintegrating others with time. By incorporating salt crystals onto the photo based paintings, the image presents a mystical otherworldly feel, capturing and refracting light and the slippage of time.

Peter Essick is a photographer, author, speaker, instructor, and drone pilot who specializes in nature and environmental themes. Named one of the 40 most influential nature photographers in the world by Outdoor Photography MagazineUK, Essick has been influenced by many noted American landscape photographers from Carleton Watkins to Robert Adams. His goal is to make photographs that move beyond mere documentation to reveal in careful compositions the human impact of development as well as the enduring power of the land.
Essick is the author of two books of his photographs, "The Ansel Adams Wilderness," and "Our Beautiful, Fragile World." He has had solo exhibitions of his work at the Booth Western Art Museum, Yoho National Park: A Canadian Gem, and at Lumière Gallery, Compositions in Nature. Essick has photographed stories for National Geographicon many environmental issues including climate change, high-tech trash, nuclear waste and freshwater. Other work has been published in international magazines. Essick's photographs are in public and private collections.
