Adam Large Glass Vase with Black Detail by Borek Sipek for Driade
By Driade, B. Sipek
Located in Brooklyn, NY
Adam, designed by Borek Sipek for Driade, is a vase characterized by iconic shape, balanced by unusual elliptical inserts. Borek Sipek (1949-2016) studied interior design at the school for Arts & Crafts in Prague from 1964-1968. He went to Germany to study architecture at the Kunsthochschule in Hamburg. He also studied aesthetics and philosophy. In 1983, he moved to the Netherlands and set up the design office that provided a base for his subsequent explorations of oriental and occidental Arts & Crafts. His fateful encounter with Driade resulted in furniture and objects. The ideas eventually found their way into the Eidos, Malastrana and Follies Collections. Sipek's systematic revisitations of traditional craft techniques and materials have won several prestigious awards including, the Croix Chevalier Dans L'ordre Des Arts Et Des Lettres from the French Government in 1991. In 1993, he won the Prins Bernard Fons Prize for architecture and arts. Sipek has an international reputation as an imaginative and versatile artist. He was appointed Prague castle architect by Czech president, Vaclav Havel. He worked from 1992-1996 on architectural detailing and other features of Joze Plecnik...

Marbled Blue Sèvres Porcelain Vase, France, Dated 1872
Located in Dallas, TX
From Sèvres, France, this lovely porcelain vase has been hand painted in a faux blue marble with black and white veining. The vase was produced in the style of a Greek stamnos, which was a vase designed to store liquids. Stamnoi are typically more squatty versions of krater vases, with handles high on the sides. The bottom of the vase is stamped with a production mark reading “Sevres 1872”. Sevres is a commune southwest of Paris that is known for its porcelain production. Manufacture nationale de Sèvres is a premier European porcelain factory that has been in Sevres since 1756. From 1800-1847, Alexander Brongniart was the director of the factory. Trained as both an engineer and a scientist, Brongniart brought about many changes to the factory, such as improving the composition of hard-paste porcelain and developing enameled colors to simulate marble. Our marbled blue Sèvres porcelain vase...

Louis Comfort Tiffany Gold Favrile Art Glass Floriform Pedestal Vase
By Louis Comfort Tiffany
Located in Cincinnati, OH
This elegant iridescent gold Favrile art glass vase was made by Tiffany Studios operating under the direction of Louis Comfort Tiffany. Tiffany Favrile Glass was first offered to the public in 1893 and this hand-blown piece dates to the mid-to-late 1920s. The vase has a warm golden glow and was crafted with a wide domed pedestal base that gives way to a ribbed body. The body flares slightly as it rises and transitions dramatically to a wide shallow neck that terminates in a scalloped-edge rim. As seen in the accompanying photographs, the well-balanced piece is nicely proportioned and displays beautifully. The vase stands 8.375" as measured to its tallest point and is 3.75" across the rim. The foot is 4" from edge to edge. The piece is free of chips and cracks and is presented in original condition with no restoration or repair. The underside bears a typical Tiffany Studios late production compound number signature reading L. C. Tiffany Inc. - Favrile and includes shape number 1548 followed by serial number 3164 N. This LC Tiffany Favrile vase...

Pisgah Forest Oxblood Ombre Vase, North Carolina Art Studio Pottery, 1939
By North Carolina Pottery
Located in Clifton Springs, NY
Beautiful rounded vase is decorated with light to dark oxblood red ombre craquelure glaze; the glaze is in high gloss finish and is smooth to the touch. The inner surfaces are finished with semi-gloss off-white glaze. The vase is in good vintage condition; it is marked and dated on the bottom. Inspired by the Arts & Crafts Movement, Walter B. Stephen and his mother began their first pottery, Nonconnah, near Memphis, Tennessee about 1904. Without prior experience, they produced slip-decorated pottery of exceptional merit. Stephen moved to Skyland, North Carolina, in 1913, where he established a second Nonconnah Pottery, the first full-time art pottery in the state. In 1926, Stephen began the operation of his third pottery, Pisgah Forest. Here he explored Oriental glazes and forms, pioneered the first crystalline glazes in the South, and developed his cameo wares which resemble English Wedgewood jasperwares. Pisgah Forest and Nonconnah pottery have gained national recognition from numerous museums and private collectors. Major exhibitions of Stephen’s work have been held at the Mint Museum in Charlotte, NC, the Asheville Art Museum, the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art in Tennessee, American Museum of Ceramic Art, Pomona, California, the McKissick Museum in Columbia, SC, North Carolina Museum of History, Raleigh, NC, and Southern Highland Craft Guild, Asheville, NC.
