Le Défilé Royal (Illustration for Voyage au Pays des Pommes) by Lucien Pissarro
By Lucien Pissarro
Located in London, GB
Le Défilé Royal (Illustration for Voyage au Pays des Pommes) by Lucien Pissarro (1863-1944) Watercolour on paper 22.5 x 26 cm (8 ⅞ x 10 ¼ inches) Signed lower left with monogram This work is accompanied by a letter of authenticity from Colin Harrison, Senior Curator of European Art at the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford. Provenance Mr Ian Robertson Exhibition London, Leicester Galleries, Memorial Exhibition of Lucien Pissarro's Work, Part II, 1947, No. 60 (catalogued as La Procession) Artist biography Born on the 20th February 1863, Lucien Pissarro was the eldest son of the Impressionist painter Camille Pissarro. Coached from a young age by his father and in the frequent company of figures such as Cézanne, Gauguin and Monet, it is no surprise that Lucien chose to pursue an artistic career. While he is best known as a landscape painter, Lucien was also a printmaker, wood engraver and printer of fine books, occasionally painting still lifes and portraits of his family. Lucien first visited England in 1870 with his family when fleeing the Franco-Prussian war. It was the beginning of a great love affair with the country. He decided to move permanently to England in 1890, becoming an English citizen in 1916. Until then he had worked as a landscape painter and book illustrator in France. During this period he met and worked with painters such as Paul Signac, Georges Seurat and Vincent van Gogh. Moving simultaneously in Impressionist and Neo-Impressionist circles, Lucien exhibited Pointillist paintings with his father in the last Impressionist exhibition in 1886. In the same year he was one of the first artists to exhibit in the “Salon des Indépendants” as a Neo-Impressionist. Despite his close relationship with his father, as revealed in their correspondence, Lucien showed remarkable independence of mind in his approach to his art. While Lucien was trained by his father, the influence the artists had on one another was reciprocal. Thanks to his relationship with Seurat and Signac, Lucien encouraged Camille to experiment with Pointillism, a characteristic of the Neo-Impressionist group. Lucien’s move to England in 1890 allowed him greater freedom to pursue his interest in book illustration and printing. There Lucien and his wife Esther established the Éragny Press, named after the Normandy village where his family lived since 1884. The Éragny Press was principally notable for creating aesthetically pleasing books and paved the way for the development of European book art. Lucien’s illustrations for these books demonstrate his talent and command of colour. Nevertheless, Lucien always considered painting his primary concern, particularly landscape painting. Continuing the tradition of the Impressionists, Lucien was a plein-air painter who liked to work outdoors and study the subject directly from nature. His landscapes reveal his fascination for the effects of weather and light. The contemporary art critic Frank Rutter described Lucien as a master of colour, writing in 1922: “there is no man living who has a more profound knowledge of the science of colour, or a more discriminating eye for its observation in nature.” Rutter was also struck by Lucien’s respect for his subject, nature itself: “Each canvas is wrought with a quiet perfection that conceals its art and is eloquent of the tender emotion which the loveliness of nature inspires in the artist.” It is clear from Rutter’s praise that Lucien’s contemporaries were impressed by his combination of English and French artistic traditions. Unsurprisingly, he became associated with artistic groups that drew inspiration from the Impressionists, including the New English Art Club, with whom he exhibited in 1904, the Fitzroy Street Group in 1907 and the Camden Town Group in 1911. To his English contemporaries Lucien represented a direct link to the Impressionist Masters. His influence can be recognised in the work of British artists such as Spencer Gore, Harold Gilman...

The Blitz, World War Two Landscape, 20th Century, British Watercolour
Located in London, GB
Watercolour on paper, signed bottom right Image size: 8 x 10 1/4 inches (20.25 x 26 cm) Mounted and framed Charles Rebel Stanton served with the First Surrey Rifles in Northern France and Belgium during the First World War. Although Stanton was not an official war artist, his stirring watercolours document the devastation of towns and villages that he visited while on active military service The Artist Charles Rebel Stanton was born in Kentish Town, London, on 3 February 1887, the third of seven children of the book seller’s assistant, Charles Stanton, and his wife, Amelia (née Tate). At the time of the 1891 Census, the family was living at 22 Corinne Road, Islington. Nothing is known of Stanton’s education but, at the time of the 1901 Census, when he was 14 years old, he was working as a Science Assistant for the School Board of London, probably at a local school. By then, he and his family had moved to 121 South Street, Greenwich, and his father was working as a carpenter. In The Art of the RMS Queen Mary (1994), Douglas M Hinkey describes Stanton as ‘a painter trained as an architect’. While nothing is known of his architectural training, he is described as an ‘artist’ in the 1911 Census, which also records that he was still living with his family, which had moved to 53 Grosvenor Park SE, St Mary Newington. In the previous year, he had won second prize in the class for ‘pictorial art’ in a competition organised by the magazine, The Studio. Charles Stanton began his career as a commercial artist, designing posters and postcards and illustrating books, and signing his work ‘Charles R Stanton’. Commissions included a poster for the Fine Art Society that was general enough in its design to have been used to advertise any number of exhibitions (though the example that has come to light promoted ‘Water Colours of Flower Time...

In 1964 he succeeded Sir Henry Rushbury as Keeper of the Royal Academy Schools, a position he held with distinction until his retirement in 1985. A View Near Redhill, 19th Century Pen and Ink Drawing by Samuel Palmer
By Samuel Palmer (b.1805)
Located in London, GB
Pen and ink on paper, inscribed 'Redhill' and dated 'June 24th 1872' lower left Image size: 4 x 8 inches (10 x 20 cm) Mounted and Framed Provenance Given to Ernest Pearce by Carlos Peacock, from the collection of Miss Louisa Twining (1820-1911), a pupil of Samuel Palmer. Carlos noted in his letter accompanying the work to Ernest Pearce that 'Going through my Palmer things for mounting the other day. I found this little sketch dating from the Redhill days. Thought you might like it by way of a Christmas gift'. Literature Carlos Peacock, Samuel Palmer , Shoreham and After, published by John Baker 1968, illustrated on page 67. This delicate pen and ink drawing depicts a view at Redhill, a town in the borough of Reigate within the county of Surrey, England. While Palmer's reputation rests mainly on his Shoreham work some of his later work, such as his sketches from Redhill, have recently received more appreciation. In 1872 Palmer was living in Redhill, at his last home, The Chantry at Cronks Hill. The Chantry is now Grade II listed due to the Palmer connection and Palmer Close, a cul-de-sac in Redhill (built in the 1960's), was also named in his honour. This work is an illustration of rural paradise, a vision of the natural world where there is a cosmic harmony between man and his environment. Indeed, Alfred Palmer, the artist's son, wrote 'Had the artist depended for his material solely on the fields, and woods, and hills around him, and had he used that material in a sordid way, he might have given us faithful representations of those he selected, but there would have been inevitable repetition, and he would never have shown us as he has undoubtedly done, the very spirit and quintessence of the loveliest and most poetic pastoral scenery - scenery which we may imagine as that of ancient England...
