A camera is a window through which a photographer interacts with the world, and it's up to the operator to decide whether his camera will be a barrier or a mirror between he and his subjects. In the 1970s, Michael Abramson chose the latter path when he brought his camera to Pepper's Hideout on Chicago's South Side. Following in the footsteps of his acknowledged influence Gyula Halász, a Hungarian photographer better known as Brassaï who became the pre-eminent chronicler of the Paris nightlife he loved so much, Abramson initiated himself into the nightlife of Chicago's predominantly black neighbourhoods. He was very much a part of the scene he documented on film, drinking, laughing, and dancing with his subjects into small hours and becoming as much a part of the atmosphere as the locals who frequented the same nightspots he did. - Joe Tangari (Numero Group, 2009)

The Season of the Witch was shot for Agent Provocateur in May 2009 at Dorney court. It was commissioned by Joe Corre and Serena Rees the original owners. Joe and I had been looking at Hogarth's etchings for A Rakes Progress, which later became an opera by Stravinski depicting the decline of Tom Rakewell, “For idle hearts and hands and minds the Devil finds work to do.” We decided we would create our own version of Bedlam but with Agent Provocateurs seductive point of view.
The challenge was to shoot their whole collection, over thirty-five pieces of lingerie and put them into one image. Despite the misconception that it is a huge multi composition in photoshop, the truth is, it isn’t. Camera position locked off and working to a very specific layout conceived with all the girls from the shop, the picture is assembled in three parts. The right-hand side of the image using our ten models and extras was shot first, then as individual scenarios. Then came the balcony shot as they changed costumes to shoot the left-hand side. Fenton Bailey son of David played Tom, and Chloe Hayward his prospective wife who stumble into the witches coven, a twisted version of The Rocky Horror show.
The witches included Alice de Lal, Daisy Lowe, Peaches Geldof, Marina Jameson, Raquel Nave, Awoui, Alex Jenny and Paz de la Huerta from Broadwalk Empire. Charlie Anderson brought a rack of costumes which everyone was persuaded to dress up in, whether it was the snake wrangler, who at one point “mislaid” a nine-foot boa constrictor, photo assistants, strip club doormen, some random punks we found roaming the streets of Windsor and the entire hair and makeup team. Joe Corre, son of Malcolm McClaren and Vivienne Westwood made a cameo performance in all four tableaus and can be seen behind the chandelier with all the girls from their offices all suitably attired. We actually flew the owl across the set but the wolf that belonged to the owner of the house was brought in and shot separately.
On my first presentation of the artwork there was a degree of disapproval, perhaps cutting the brides throat was a tad over the top but Joes only reaction was “ couldn’t we have a bloody great big pentagram painted on the floor?” I returned to my office that afternoon and duly painted the floorboards with the devil's insignia which was then comped onto the shot. With productions like this, so many people go unmentioned such as my producer Jenny, Jess Morris, Sarah Shotton, Kirstin Piggott and Eamonn Hughes on hair and make up my dear friend Peter Smith who styled all the food, and most importantly my partners in crime Lee Stuart who assembled everything without any hesitation and a huge degree of inspiration, and Mark Townsend who balanced the light and made the 5x4 plate camera...

A young man crouches on a rocky outcrop, approached by a small tortoise. He wears an archetypal service uniform, his jacket cuffs with bands of gold braiding, and polished brass buttons. His banded cap is of a sort later appropriated from the military for use in private service, and his loose socks and mud-spattered brogues remind of British schoolboys. A distant arched structure can be seen beyond, perhaps a small bridge over water. The photograph was taken by Lichfield on a visit to the Empty Quarter with his lifelong friend Hugh Myddelton Biddulph, of Chirk Castle, Wales. The visit was one of Lichfield’s earliest to the Middle East, which he would revisit throughout his career. The pair travelled through the region on a Mini Moke, carrying basic supplies and sleeping in a teepee. The photograph was left after Myddelton’s death to his second wife Gaia Servadio, the eccentric Italian journalist, writer, and first mother-in-law to Boris Johnson. After her death in 2021, it passed to her artist son Orlando Mostyn-Owen, and later into a private British collection.
Patrick Lichfield was born in 1939, the son of Thomas Anson, Viscount Anson, and Anne Bowes-Lyon, later Princess Anne of Denmark. After seven years in the Grenadier Guards, Lichfield began his career as a photographer’s assistant in 1962 to Kasterine and Michael Wallis, after which he earned a five-year contract with American Vogue. He benefited greatly from his access to the royal family, since Queen Elizabeth was his maternal first cousin. In 1981 he took the official photograph for the wedding of the Prince and Princess of Wales. Although best known for his portraits of the royal family, Lichfield’s celebrity portraits included Yves Saint Laurent, Jane Birkin, Cecil Beaton, David Hockney, Kate Bush, Ian McKellen, Joan Collins, Joanna Lumley...

From the start of the 1960s and continuing until the present day the name of Terry O'Neill has become inextricably connected with some of the most interesting takes on photographic portraits of celebrities. From the Beatles and Rolling Stones in the 1960s to the Royal Family and the Prime Minister's family in more recent times Terry O'Neill has proved adept at recording the significant subjects of the day in a visually stimulating and sometimes unexpected way and thus illuminated history of our age.
Terry O'Neill was born on 30 July 1938 in the East End of London. His career as a photographer evolved by chance out of his first ambition to become a jazz drummer. Leaving school at fourteen and then doing his National Service his ambition was to go to America to study with the great drummers there. He thought that the best way to travel frequently and inexpensively to the USA would be to get a job as an air steward for BOAC. The airline at that time had no vacancies for stewards but suggested he took a vacancy in their technical photographic unit, which he combined with time at an art school and he then became interested in photojournalism.
At first, O'Neill worked as freelance at London Airport, later was offered a stunt as a reportage photographer at Heathrow. This was followed by three years in Fleet Street, with O'Neill at 21, the youngest photographer in Fleet Street taking pop pictures for the up-tempo Daily Sketch.
One thing lead to another and O'Neill quickly became a significant image-maker and one of the group of talented young photographers who helped create the photographic icons of the 1960s and create part of the buzz that became Swinging London. The peer group that emerged in this decade included David Bailey, Terence Donovan and Brian Duffy from the East End and Patrick Lichfield and Lewis Morley...

Celebrity photographer, Lorenzo Agius, is renowned for his unique, intimate and often comical portraits of the 'stars'. The photographer shot to great prominence following his seminal images from the 1996 groundbreaking British film, Trainspotting.
Agius has had a colourful affair with 'celebrity' over the past two decades. Expertly capturing the character and individuality of each of his sitters, Agius' images flaunt stylistic brilliance and bubble with personality.
From Madonna to Margot Robbie, Agius' body of work portrays the varying and often polar characters of major icons. He tunes into the creativity of his subjects and successfully reflects the mood of the moment; the results are natural, accessible and in each case reflect the artist's eye for light, composition and a strong imagination for narrative.
Whether it be celebrating British culture or capturing the sleek, Hollywood look, Agius' personality is intrinsic to his photographs; the mood is always light and refreshing and humour is ever present.

American photographer Bob Willoughby (1927-2009) had a photographic career that coincided with the Golden Age of film. As the first on set film photographer, Willoughby revolutionised the documentation of Hollywood. Willoughby was the first 'outside’ photographer employed by studios to document the making of films.
