French ceramist in Vallauris
Robert Picault has contributed to the revival of culinary ceramics by updating traditional local forms decorated with lines and geometric designs.
His identity style has been a great success and continues to decorate the table today. His personal pieces are sought after by art collectors.
A former student of the School of Applied Arts in Paris, Robert Picault arrived in Vallauris in 1946. He created with his school friends Roger Capron (1922-2006) and Jean Derval (1925-2010), the Callis workshop.
In this village of a hundred potters, they met the neighboring ceramists André Baud, the 4 potters and among others the Madoura workshop, where he frequented the famous painter Picasso from 1949 to 1955. He also became friends with Jean Cocteau, Fernand Léger, Louis Aragon and Elsa Triolet.

Peculiar and original German ceramic jug colored with a beautiful shade of red, black, and a vivid orange; it has a simple shape but at the same time innovative and modernist; the beautiful and vivid colors are balanced and proportioned respecting a minimalist design; the glazing of the jar was obtained by first laying down one color, proceeding to fix it by firing it in a kiln, then the same procedure was performed for the other colors; on the bottom bears the traditional mark found on this type of object, indicating that the object was created in a limited series with the jug number and the model number; unfortunately, on our jug this mark is barely legible, but it exists and allows us to say that this object was produced between 1968 and 1971 in a craft workshop in the city of Dresden (then in East Germany), an important center of porcelain and ceramic production. "Fat lava" is the name given to a certain style of East German art...

The rounded bowl stands raised on four half ball shaped feet with a basket weave styled design. Born in Santiago de Compostela (Spain) in 1901, son of Evaristo Rodriguez Bréa and Antonia Bonome Pérez, he worked very young in his father's humble cabinetmaking workshop. Little attracted by this job, when his father asks him what he wants to do: "sculptor" he answers.
He therefore entered, at the age of 13, in the religious imagery workshop of José Rivas, at the foot of this cathedral which he admired so much, then at the age of 18 in that of Enrique Carballido.
"Because he is so, so young, Bonome! Ridiculously young said a critic, who probably did not know that these years of apprenticeship, of real apprenticeship as an apprentice in a real workshop (a saint a day and strongly, for all the processions, all the chapels and all the devotees of the province) are each worth four years -at least- of study in an academy..." Margarita Nelken (Madrid 1932)
In 1924, he left for Madrid where he exhibited at the Galician Center, at the National Exhibition and then in La Coruña.
In 1925, at the Galicia Center in Buenos Aires he sold almost 30 of his works.
From 1926 to 1927 he exhibited in Barcelona, at the Venice Biennale then in Monza (Italy) where he met Pirandello, then in Havana.
