A pair of South Indian (Kerala) wooden boat steering paddles from the mid-20th century. The smaller paddle, with it's darker wood, features an ornately carved scrolling heart accent at the top of the blade, with a raised/ribbed texture own to the tip. The larger paddle is more of a medium tone wood with iron bracing at the blade neck and a more pointed tip. Both paddles have as a beautiful salt water patina, and wonderful show of history and use by the wearing about the tips of the blades. These paddles would have once been used in steering the boats of the Kerala, including the 100 ft long snake boats, or 'chundanvallams' as they are locally known.
