La Plage de Cabourg
Located in Sheffield, MA
René-Xavier Prinet French, 1861-1946 La Plage de Cabourg Oil on canvas 18 by 31 in, w/ frame 25 ¼ by 38 ¾ in Signed lower right Coming from a family of notable Franche-Comté (Prinet notaries from Luxeuil-les-Bains), René-Xavier Prinet is the son of Henry Prinet (born in 1824), imperial prosecutor in Vitry -the-François, and the brother of Gaston Prinet, diplomat. Appointed to Paris, Henry Prinet lives with his family on rue Bonaparte just a stone's throw from the Ecole des Beaux - Arts, to which René - Xavier seemed destined. His father, an amateur painter (a Madonna with Child is kept in the church of Suaucourt, Haute-Saone), is willing that his son acquires an artistic training and he makes him receive the advice of the painter Louis Charles Timbal, strong employee for decorations of the churches of Paris. By his maternal grandmother, René-Xavier Prinet is related to the painters of the Court Hubert Drouais (1699-1767) and François-Hubert Drouais (1727-1775). Around 1880, he began his education as a painter by being admitted into the studio of the painter Jean-Léon Gérôme. He stayed with the master until 1885. He then became associated with the Frankish painters Georges and Lucien Griveau, Antonio de La Gandara, classmates at the Beaux-Arts, Louis-Auguste Giradot, Felix Desgranges and Jules-Alexis Muenier. At the same time, he studies at the Julian Academy. His picture Jesus Child is his first painting accepted at the Salon of French Artists in 1885. He exhibited at this Salon until 1889. At that time he became associated with a group of young painters called the Black Band : Lucien Simon, André Dauchez, René Ménard and Charles Cottet. He became a professor at the Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he created and directed the first workshop for women artists. In 1891, he received an order from the State for the decoration of the Palace of the Legion of Honor: The Four Seasons. His sketches are accepted. The same year, he exhibited in Paris at the Durand-Ruel gallery with Albert Besnard , Jules-Alexis Muenier and Henri Fantin-Latour. One of his most famous works, The Kreutzer Sonata, is exhibited in 1901 at the exhibition "Contemporary French Art" in Stuttgart where it is sold to the Prince Regent of Bavaria . The year 1904 sees the creation, with Lucien Simon and Antoine Bourdelle , of the workshops of the Académie de la Grande Chaumière. In 1909, he illustrated Rene Boylesve's Young Girl. In 1913, he was named secretary of the National Society of Fine Arts. He travels to the United States as a jury member at the Carnegie Institute exhibition in Pittsburgh. His paintings The Cavaliers and Interior dining room are presented on this occasion. He frequented the Sundays of Besnard, rue Guillaume-Tell. Prinet painted the reception of Albert Besnard at the Academy of Fine Arts in 1912. In 1916, he painted the painter Felix Desgranges in his family room in Luxeuil with the Australian artist Bessie Davidson...

"Stars and Stripes" Americana Pop 23 Karat Gold Leaf/Red/Blue Oil, Flag Painting
By Charlotte Andry Gibbs
Located in Wellesley, MA
"Stars and Stripes" 23 Karat Gold Leaf and Oil on Linen 26 x 50 Inches Charlotte Gibbs’ "flag" and "star" paintings often reference the artist's interest in Pop art and sometimes incorporate 23 karat gold leaf in addition to oil paint, but not always. With its depiction of a graphically idealized American flag. "Stars and Stripes" is at once lovely and bold. Beautifully painted and exquisitely executed, these elegant works of rich color are sophisticated examples of Gibbs' ability to invoke whimsy while demanding serious attention, and the artist's simple distressed white wood double lattice frame is the perfect complement. Also available is a smaller version of this painting, "American Standard" 18 x 34 inches, as well as a vertical variation "Vertical U.S. Flag" 34 x 18 inches. Additional variations of the American flag series are available without 23 karat gold leaf ("Reverse Image" in black and white, "Flag #4" in black, white and tan, and "Black and White" which is black, gray and white). The artist's "Canton" series of paintings focuses on stars only. Paintings from this series are available in navy blue with gold leaf stars ("Canton Major" 34 x 48 Inches), olive drab with gold leaf stars ("Canton Olive and Gold" 30 x 42 Inches), and all 23 karat gold leaf ("Starry Splendor" 30 x 42 Inches). Gibbs is often commissioned to paint variations on her 'flags' and 'stars' to customize scale, orientation (horizontal or vertical) palette, and/or symbols of particular significance to the client. Additionally available are flag paintings in various sizes inspired by the British flag with and without 23 karat gold leaf ("Sgt. Pepper Jack," "Union Jack Red and Gold," "Union Jack Navy and Gold," and "Union Jack White and Gold"), the Scottish flag...

About the Artist
Artist John McCabe produces graphic illustrations that take a progressive spin on pop art. He typically takes influence from his music to create vibrant caricatures of people, places, and things significant to the industry. Growing up, one of the highlights for John when buying music is the artwork on the packages. Inspired by that, he created art for his first EP, and every subsequent release includes artwork for each single, plus a front and back cover for the record. "The pieces are normally tied or related to the lyrics of a particular song," shares John. "In the case where I have made a series structured around music, a unique narrative unfolds within each." As imaginative as he is, John usually paints from the island surface of his kitchen or the dining room table. His music studio also doubles as a work area where he does pre-sketches. John has had several profiles from VoyageLA, Shoutout LA, and Queen City Arts and Sounds. His record label has featured his works along with his eclectic music releases.

Take Flight, Abstract Painting
Located in San Francisco, CA

Artist Comments
"This painting was inspired by birds taking flight,” says artist Linda Shaffer. “I love hummingbirds and live in Las Vegas, Nevada where they flourish. They zip all around my back yard and are beautiful to behold.” Linda captures the essence of the creature into a vibrant multi-layered mixed media. She utilized red, turquoise, and blue with hand-printed paper, original images, and washi papers resulting in a dynamic abstract piece.

About the Artist
Artist Linda Shaffer creates intricately layered abstract collages based on her worldly travels. "My defining art moment was when I was eleven years old and I got to visit Van Briggle Pottery in Colorado Springs," says Linda. "I watched mesmerized as the potter working on the wheel created a beautiful piece of art as if by magic from a lump of brown wet mud. I knew someday I would create those beautiful pieces of magic." After high school, Linda became a registered nurse. On her days off, she made pottery at a local studio. As her nursing career progressed – from labor and delivery to ICU and trauma, and then college nursing – she returned to school for her bachelor’s in business administration. Every elective she chose was an art class, and she built her own clay studio. Eventually, Linda earned her master’s in public health and became a tenured college professor. She was delighted that the job allowed her to take art classes every semester, where she discovered painting and printmaking. Linda retired early from teaching and wanted to learn more about fine jewelry, so she attended the Gemological Institute of America. Since 2011, she has been working full-time as a painter and jeweler. When Linda's not making art, she enjoys golfing with a close circle of friends. She's made two hole-in-ones and plans for more.

Portrait of a British Naval Lieutenant
Located in Boston, MA
'Portrait of British Naval Officer' is attributed to the British painter and engraver Daniel Orme (1766-c.1832) based on the scratched inscription verso, as well as its similarity to Orme’s known engraving oeuvre. The oil on tin portrait bears the scratched inscription “D. Orme” verso, which in the absence of contravening evidence as to the artist is significant in attributing the work to Orme. Katherine Coombs, Curator of Paintings at the Word & Image Department of the Victoria and Albert Museum, London and the writer of the Dictionary of National Biography article on Orme, states that Orme is “so obscure an artist that if his name is indeed scratched on the [tin] that seems good evidence for it being so.” Additionally, Orme’s stipple engravings of prominent naval figures in oval, including John Hunter in 1792, Horatio Nelson in 1798, among others at the National Portrait Gallery, London are consistent with the style and composition of the portrait. Roger Quarm, Curator of Paintings at the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich notes that Orme’s “engraved portraits of naval officers tend to be oval”. Orme is known to have issued a series of engravings by subscription that included portraits of popular naval Admirals and Officers in 1797. Two oils in the collection of the National Maritime Museum, also demonstrate Orme’s execution of naval subject matter. The sitter has been identified as a lieutenant in the British Navy wearing the “full-dress uniform for the period 1787-1812,” according to Roger Quarm. Alfred Umhey has confirmed this identification of the sitter as a “lieutenant in the uniform pattern 1787-1795, which is however worn post that date.” The medal worn around the sitter’s neck has been identified as the Sultan’s Medal for Egypt issued in 1801, by both Quarm and Umhey. The Sultan’s Medal for Egypt or the Turkish Medal for Egypt was issued in 1801 to members of the British Army and Navy by Sultan Selim...
