Bufo Contemporary Bronze Sculpture Nude Boy Marble Stone Male Figure

Bufo Contemporary Bronze Sculpture Nude Boy Marble Stone Male Figure
Wim van der Kant (1949, Kampen) is a selftaught artist. Next to his busy profession as a teacher at a high school, he intensively practises his profession as a sculptor. Only when his work would measure up to his own standards, he decided to present it to the rest of the world. In 1995, he exhibited for the first time with Morren Galleries. Van der Kant desires to sculpt young people who still stand uninhibited and curiously in life. The reason he chooses to sculpt boys is, because he is one himself, this way the subject is closer to him. The anatomy of his figures testify of perfectionism. Van der Kant's subjects show similarities with the sculptures from the Greek and Roman antiquity...

This is a unique work, not from an edition. The raw white cast marble sculpture itself was not created by the artist; it is a found object which Graves has hand-painted and transformed with his own design. The sculpture is cast marble: over 90% natural crushed Greek Marble stone with a small amount of resin poured into a mold, made in Heraklion, Greece.
The Venus de Milo is an ancient Greek sculpture that was created during the Hellenistic period, sometime between 150 and 125 BC. It is one of the most famous works of ancient Greek sculpture, having been prominently displayed at the Louvre Museum since shortly after the statue was rediscovered on the island of Milos...

PROVENANCE
Georges Manolakos, 10 rue Buffault, Paris
Charles Gillot (1853-1903), Paris, acquired from the above on October 5th, 1899
Christie's, Paris, Ancienne Collection Charles Gillot (1853-1903), March 5th, 2008, no. 150, illus.
this lovely figure of Aphrodite is represented standing, naked, wearing a tiara, with her hair arranged in long curls, tied in a chignon and surmounted by a diadem. She is holding her girdle in her right hand. The statuette is mounted on a quadrangular Verde delle Alpi marble base, typical of late 19th/early 20th century.
Listed in Charles Gillot's account book in 1899 as acquired n Paris from Georges Manolakas, a Greek dealer, for 800 Franks. Charles Gillot, one of the most renowned French collectors, was the son of the engraver Firmin Gillot, inventor of paniconography, more widely known as “gillotage”, opening the first French photoengraving workshop in 1876. His collection was mostly dispersed after his death in 1903, partly donated to the Musée du Louvre and then transferred to the Musée Guimet...
