Brother Mel began experimenting with making paper in the early 1990s. He approached the medium as another sculptural material, dying and molding it into shapes and colors reflective of his other steel and canvas works.
Blooming Sky is a framed triptych of handmade paper applied over three separate canvases. Brother Mel often used a grid design as the basic layout for many of his paper works. The floating blocks of flat color in this piece are arranged in a loose version of a grid with squares and rectangles of varying sizes. Curved, wave-like impressions add texture and unify the blocks of color across the three canvases.
