Her Treasures
Located in New Orleans, LA
Our lives are filled with a lot of stories and experiences which we rarely talk about. Life is ultimately about self and each person has a different story to tell. Two people can be in the same place but they have different experiences. My works tell stories from everyday occurrences, dreams and premonitions from past times to recent times and sometimes possible future events. I am inspired by the unuttered thoughts, feelings and expressions of people. My works are usually one colour but I sometimes use other mediums like gouache, ballpoint pens and the likes to further express my thoughts in my works. I first came across linocut printmaking at my Alma Mata AHMADU BELLO UNIVERSITY, ZARIA and I loved the monochrome effect despite the detailing it takes to produce each artwork. At the end of the day, if a viewer can reflect on each piece not only for its beauty but feeling a sense of nostalgia I have succeeded in my work . Nneka Chima...

Purple Heart
By Esperanza Cortes
Located in New Orleans, LA
The artist says of her work... Arrested Symphony is an exhibition incorporating sculptures, reliefs, drawings and hanging works that explore the theme of injustice that is at the roots of the predatory gem and mineral excavation industry. While at a residency in Knoxville, Tennessee, I discovered that Oakridge was only 30 miles away. Oakridge played a key role in the development of the Atom Bomb and the Manhattan Project. I began an exploration and comparison of Uranium and Emeralds. These minerals look very much alike, beautiful but dangerous on their effect on civil conflict. Colombia my birthplace, has the finest Emeralds in the world. The mining of Emeralds was an important element in the continued colonization of the region. Emeralds have helped to fund the more than 60-year conflict which has taken over 450,000 lives and displaced about 5.7 million people. Uranium has brought destruction to a level which altered the future of warfare. The developments made during the Manhattan Project led to the death of about 700,000 people and its effects are still felt around the world. I use Colombia as an example, however this situation is repeating itself in many parts of the world. Sierra Leone, Liberia, the Republic of Congo, the Central African Republic and the Democratic Republic of Congo are all involved in brutal civil conflicts fueled by Blood Diamonds. This project will make visual the human cost extracted with these minerals, once exposed to the light of day they can never be unearthed. My practice is an ongoing object-based exploration through which I create artworks which are organic and improvisational constructions that are infused with hope and renewal. The hand-crafted artworks are poetically and intricately crafted, creating an intimate repository for the individual and collective memory and implement the human body as a symbol and expression of nature, vulnerability and power. The work encourages viewers to reconsider social and historical narratives especially when dealing with the aftermath of Colonialism and raises critical questions about the politics of erasure and exclusion. ESPERANZA CORTÉS is a Colombian born contemporary multidisciplinary artist based in New York City. Cortés has exhibited in the United States in solo and group exhibitions in venues including Smack Mellon Gallery, Neuberger Museum of Art, Bronx Museum of Art, Queens Museum, El Museo Del Barrio, MoMA PS1, Socrates Sculpture Park and White-box Gallery in New York City. Nationally Cortes exhibitions include Cleveland Art Museum, OH, CSU Galleries at Cleveland University, OH, Helen Day Art Center, VT and The Lorenzo Homar...

Globe de Mariée - Mixed Set
By Carlton Scott Sturgill
Located in New Orleans, LA
Medium: vintage glass dome, wedding dresses and fabric, Ralph Lauren shirts, barge wood, silver wire, ribbon, floral tape, crystals and faux pearls CARLTON SCOTT STURGILL received his Masters of Arts (Fine Art) from London’s Chelsea Collage of Art in Design in 2005, and his BA from the University of Cincinnati in 2002. Although he now lives outside of the Queen City, his work continues to be shaped by his Midwestern roots. His work has been exhibited in numerous galleries and museums in North America and Europe, including the Cornell Museum of Art in Delray Beach, Florida, Temple Bar Gallery in Dublin, Ireland, the Newhouse Center for Contemporary Art in New York City, as well as, PULSE Miami Beach Contemporary Art Fair and Art on Paper NYC. Sturgill currently lives and works in New Orleans, Louisiana. The artist discusses the new body of work . . . My grandmother was a quilt maker. Born in 1915 in Appalachia, her quilts weren’t made from anything that you would find at a Joann Fabric store. She took objects that had an existing function and gave them a new life. I grew up sleeping under a patchwork of her faded housedresses and my grandfather’s work-worn button-down shirts. Where others saw scraps of tattered fabric that had reached the end of their lifespan, my grandmother saw Ohio stars, Maltese crosses and other quilting patterns. Tradition dictates an assumption of purpose, a prescribed path for everything that must be followed. Everything from work shirts to paint chip samples to wedding dresses have an agreed upon life arch. But an intervention, such as my grandmother’s, can give something a new purpose. A work shirt becomes a quilt, a paint chip sample becomes a mosaic, and a wedding dress becomes a bouquet of roses. The essence of the former purpose remains even as new characteristics are created, giving the objects a dual citizenship between what they were and what they have become. Until recently the tradition of marriage had a prescribed path as well. One man and one woman joined together in a life-long monogamous union resulting in children, and until astonishingly recently, they needed to be of the same race and religion and from similar socioeconomic backgrounds. Many people believe that wedding traditions have been static for millennia, but like everything else it’s in a state of glacial evolution, punctuated by dramatic interventions that create revolutionary change. In our time of titanic shifts in the definition of marriage, many elements are being added, blending ancient and contemporary traditions to create something new. My latest series of work, titled Something Old/Something New, examines the shifting notions of marriage by repurposing longstanding traditions into something more fitting for our current time. Secondhand wedding clothes are given a fresh start as roses, dahlias, and clematises. Paint chip samples are cut apart and spliced back together to spell out a couple’s longing for a non-conventional household. The French traditional of globe de mariée...
