Russian Imperial-era Silver Alexander III Salt Throne, Sazikov, circa 1880
By Pavel Sazikov
Located in St. Catharines, ON
Of typical Old Russian design this rare and distinctive silver salt cellar in the shape of a throne is from the Romanov era, period of Tsar Alexander III. The surface simulates wooden bark, the hinged lid and pierced back decorated with star, heart and zigzag motifs recalling Pan Slavic designs, the base of trompe l’oeil texture, a technique which made Sazikov famous.

Supplier to the Imperial court and founded during the reign of Catherine the Great in the center of Moscow, Sazikov was one of the earliest silver firms in Russia. In the 1820s Sazikov introduced historicism in Russian silver by producing objects with historical motifs or imitating ancient styles. Decades before Fabergé, the firm excelled in the Style Russe...

Bertel Gardberg Triennale Rosewood Flatware Service 100 Pieces
Located in Orimattila, FI
Bertel Gardberg
(Finland, 1916-2007)
Bertel Gardberg, BERTEL GARDBERG, A FLATWARE SERVICE, 100 PIECES. Triennale.
Manufactured by Fiskars. Designed in 1956-57.
27 forks, 24+6 knives, 17+21+5 spoons.
Minor wear.
Bertel Gardberg was born in Tammisaari in 1916. He was related to goldsmith Erik Gardberg, who worked in Helsinki from 1829 to 1854, and Fabergé subcontractor Alexander Gardberg. Bertel's doctor-father Otto Gardberg was also a skilled carpenter. His mother was Sally Aschan.
Career
In his youth, Gardberg worked on a merchant ship. There he learned how little space there was for purposeless objects. Gardberg found his own field when he was selected in 1938 as a student of the first course of the Helsinki Goldsmith's School. At the same time, he also studied metal forging in the evening course of the Central School of Arts and Crafts and in the evening course of the Vocational Training Institute. Gardberg graduated from goldsmith school in 1941, but frontline service in the Winter and Continuation War slowed down the start of his career.
Danish silversmithing was well known, so Gardberg went to Denmark to perfect his skills. He worked there, among other things, in A. Michelsen's gold and silversmith's studio and took with him from Denmark an appreciation of craftsmanship and finished quality.
In 1949, Gardberg established his own office in Helsinki at the corner of Mannerheimintie and Nordenskiöldinkatu. In the same year, he received the right to stamp. In 1955, he moved to Isol Roobertinkatu, where his studio was until 1966.
From 1953 to 1954, Gardberg was the designer and finally the chief designer of Galeries Lafayette. The 1954 Milan Triennale gold medal was awarded to Gardberg for his designs of steel serving platters, cutlery and a pewter cigarette case. He also received awards from the triennial in 1957 and 1960.
In 1960, Gardberg received a rare Golden Ring of Honor from the German goldsmith's art society. In 1961, he received the Lunning Award, the most prestigious honor of Nordic designers. In the same year, he also received the Pro Finlandia Award.
From 1966 to 1971, Gardberg lived in Ireland, where he was founding the Kilkenny Design Workshops...

Antique American Personal Travel Sterling Silver Flatware Set
By Albert Coles
Located in Mount Kisco, NY
Antique American three-piece Sterling Silver Travel Flatware set. In 1800, according to the exhibition catalogue, it is assumed that not even one percent of American households owned even a single silver spoon, let alone a fork. Silver was desirable because it was hard enough to hold up and didn't poison people like lead, but it was expensive. Then, in 1859, several prospectors made a huge silver strike in Virginia City, Nevada. Silver suddenly got cheaper and so did silver utensils...
