As opposed to digital prints, linocuts celebrate the long tradition of handmade editioned art that has been practiced for nearly two millennia. While woodblock printmaking goes back thousands of years, artists like Picasso popularized linocut in the early part of the 20th century due to wider availability of linoleum.
“All parts of my process are done by hand, from the original drawing, to the carving, and final printing. In order to produce a work in multiple colors, separate blocks need to be carved and printed for each hue. As a result, creating a limited edition of colorful prints is quite time consuming and requires a great deal of patience. And while there are multiple prints created from the same plates, each one is truly an original work of art” Von Wiegand explains.

Between the years of 1946 and 1956, Pablo Picasso pulled concepts from his earlier creations, a series of drawings and watercolor, in order to form Bacchanale (1956).
Pablo Picasso worked with the renowned pochoir studio Jacomet many times over his career, entrusting the studio to reproduce his work faithfully. A refined stencil-based technique, pochoir is characterized by its crisp lines and brilliant colors, producing images that have a wet appearance. Pochoir begins with the analysis of the composition, including color tones and densities, of a color image. Numerous stencils were designed as a means of creating an image. The stencils were made of aluminum, copper, or zinc and would be cut with a straight-edged knife. The initial layers would be created with watercolor washes and the final marks applied with soft, opaque gouache, a process termed "lean to fat". The images were further refined in an effort to create the most vivid, colored works on paper. Pochoir was most popular from the late nineteenth century through the 1930s, its center of activity in Paris.
