"In the series “This is a real place!” I was fascinated by how the underside of the pier at Saint Simons Island, GA was like a readymade collage. The way the pilings and rails divide and frame the spaces between them looks artificially imposed on the scene until you notice the way the waves bounce off the pilings and the railings cast shadows on the water. In some iterations, I chose to simplify the structures of the pier and lighten the values so that it would emphasize the detail in the water. Likewise, I omitted a family of starlings and their droppings in favor of highlighting the geometry of the architecture and the colors and patterns of the water.
Making paintings in a series allows me to investigate the results of making different decisions about an image. How I crop or stylize it, the manner in which I apply the paint, what gets included or excluded all add shades of meaning to each piece. Additionally, depictions of the same subject in different weather, seasons, times of day, and tides allows me a deeper understanding. I notice more relationships, colors, and details every time I paint the subject.
Every painting is a pile of decisions. Playing with removing more and more details to see what is truly important sometimes improves the painting. The fewer elements you include in an image, the more each one means, and the more important it is to get each thing perfect.
At times I like to paint every single detail I can find in a scene, and other times I feel like the unadorned components are sufficient to hold each other in a satisfying composition. I often add simplified shapes to my paintings to highlight the presence of absence or to heighten the importance of each area by creating stark visual contrasts. The physicality of the paint also plays a role. I used highly textured, thickly applied paint to construct the solid structural elements, and luminous layers of thinly glazed paint for the delicate linework and subtle blending of the water." - Brooke Lanier...

It is from the "Table Top" series, which is one of three series, along with his "Still Life" and his "Flora" series, making up a larger body of work produced between the years 2019-2021. The leading actor in this three-part drama is the late afternoon light with the supporting cast being the objects of his attention -- a deer antler, a dying flower, plaster casts of his daughter’s hand and foot, the various vessels and forms in relation to each other as the light moves across their surfaces. The elephant in the room for the latter work is the lockdown mood that intensifies and thickens the air in these still lifes. Image size is approx. 14 1/2 x 11” printed on 19 x 13” sheets, edition of 10. Also available as image size approx. 19 x 14 1/4” printed on 22 x 17” sheets, edition of 5 ($2,500) - listed separately. Signed, titled, dated and numbered lower margin.
Brooklyn-born artist Paul Cava began his career as an artist in the late 1960's. Cava made his first explorations as a poet, multi-media artist, filmmaker, photographer and painter. He finally settled in the last three decades on a hybrid form of expression that synthesized his previous efforts and anticipated the current digital use of photography by combining photographs, words, collage, drawing, painting, and printmaking into his own visual language, the core of which is a personal visual poetry.
Cava has exhibited paintings, drawings and photo-based works from 1976 to the present in galleries and museums in the United States and Europe. His work has been collected by a broad range of private and public institutions, including The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, The Philadelphia Museum of Art, The Princeton University Museum of Art, and The Bibliotheque Nationale, Paris. His work has been featured in many publications including "Eyemazing Magazine" and "Das Magazin." Cava was a recipient of Pennsylvania Council on the Arts grants in 1981 and 1999. In 2005, the German publisher Edition Galerie Vevais released "Walt Whitman and Paul Cava / Children of Adam," a deluxe volume of Cava’s photo-based art and Walt Whitman’s poetry. Diane Lachman’s photographic pandemic project began in March 2020, when Covid 19 forced us to shelter at home. After a year of experimentation with the refraction of natural light through prisms, she created complex and vibrant images that reflect our experiences during these tumultuous times. By observing the change of the position and quality of light and shadow each day, she developed a new sense of the passage of time. Her photographs reflect the desolate days of this period as well as the bright days when we experienced hope. The "Silent Echo" series recalls the strange quiet and isolation she experienced during the shut down. The daily act of photographing the color and light gave her a sense of balance and purpose.
Lachman’s inventive abstract paintings and photographs emphasize the expressive power of color. Her work has been the subject of twelve solo shows. Most recently, an exhibition of her pandemic photography project: “Refracted World” was shown in July 2021 at Muse Gallery in Philadelphia. She participates in many juried and invitational group shows. Currently, Lachman is the acting director of Muse Gallery in Philadelphia where she has been a member since 2010. Her paintings are represented in numerous private and corporate collections, including Temple University School of Medicine, the Howard Gittis Student Center Art Collection at Temple, the Art Collection at Park Towne Place in Philadelphia, and the Lankenau Medical Center.
Lachman studied at Rhode Island School of Design and the Cleveland Institute of Art. She earned her BFA and MFA degrees at the University of Pennsylvania, where she taught drawing and color theory from 1993 to 2013. Antonio Petruccelli (1907-1994) began his career as a textile designer. He became a freelance illustrator in 1932 after winning several House Beautiful cover illustration contests.
