Renato Guttuso (Bagheria, 1911 – Rome, 1987). His father Gioacchino, a land-surveyor and amateur watercolourist, and his mother Giuseppina d’Amico, due to disagreements with their own town depending on their liberal ideas, registered the birth on 2 January 1912 in Palermo. In his birthplace Guttuso discovered painting at a very early age; as he himself wrote: “… among my father’s watercolours, the studio of the painter Domenico Quattrociocchi and the workshop of the cart painter Emilio Murdolo my path was taking shape when I was six, seven, ten years old…”.Guttuso was awarded the Lenin Prize at the time of his exhibition at the Art Academy in Moscow, 1972. The same year a large retrospective toured Eastern Europe calling at Praha, Bucarest, Bratislava and Budapest. Sergio Barletta (1934) is an Italian cartoonist and illustrator, who has also published some humorous and political satire books.
From the age of 22 is active in Rome, where he worked as an illustrator and art director in some monthly magazines like “Costume”, Diners Club house organ, BP Review, IBM, and others. In 1965 started the joint-working with Marino Gallery in Rome, and in 1966 in Milan with Humour Graphic’s group, at Levi Gallery and others in the following years. In these years graphic work and illustration are mixed with painting and photography, also with satirical drawings for Rinascita, weekly of the Italian communist party; Azione Sociale, weekly of ACLI Catholic Workers Association; movie posters, advertising for Gucci, some writings for Popular Photography Italiana, lay-outs, writings and illustrations for Avinews, bimonthly for tour operators and so on. During the eighties he starts a long co-operation with satirical weekly “Il Sale”, complemented by a book with Ottaviano edizioni in Milan and others publications in Turin and Rome, all of satirical drawings. In this period he collaborates with Linus, the most important Italian comics monthly, and Harakiri, a humour weekly published in France. The German impressionist artist and etcher studied at the Prussian Academy of Arts and after he spent two years as a tutor to the daughters of Count Friedrich von Perponcher-Sedlnitzky, during which time he travelled to Dresden, Vienna, Venice, Munich, Nuremberg and Merano. But when he did a study trip to the Netherlands, Belgium and France, here he was influenced by the Impressionism.
