“Tending the Sheep”
By Myles Birket Foster
Located in Southampton, NY
Beautifully executed original hand colored lithograph using gouache and watercolor. Scene in Surrey, England. Signedxwith monogram in plate lower left, Myles Birket Foster. Published by M. H. Long. Condition is very good. In original 2 inch wide birdseye maple antique frame with thick museum mat with gold innner edge. Overall 22 by 26 inches. Biography Myles Birket Foster (4 February 1825 – 27 March 1899) was a popular English illustrator, watercolour artist and engraver in the Victorian period. His name is also to be found as Myles Birkett Foster. Life and work Foster was born in North Shields, England of a primarily Quaker family, but his family moved south to London in 1830, where his father founded M. B. Foster & sons — a successful beer-bottling company. He was schooled at Hitchin, Hertfordshire and on leaving initially went into his father's business. However, noticing his talent for art, his father secured an apprenticeship with the notable wood engraver, Ebenezer Landells, where he worked on illustrations for Punch magazine and the Illustrated London News. On leaving Landells' employ, he continued to produce work for the Illustrated London News and the Illustrated London Almanack. He also found work as a book illustrator and, during the 1850s, trained himself to paint in watercolours. His illustrations of Longfellow’s Evangeline and books of poetry by other contemporaries were a great success, and he quickly became a successful artist in watercolours. Birket Foster became an Associate of the "Old" Watercolour Society (Later the Royal Watercolour Society) in 1860 and exhibited some 400 of his paintings at the Royal Academy over more than 2 decades. Birket Foster travelled widely, painting the countryside around Scotland, the Rhine Valley, the Swiss lakes and in Italy, especially Venice. In 1863 he moved to Witley, near Godalming in Surrey where he had a house ("The Hill") built. Being friendly with Edward Burne-Jones and William Morris, he had the house decorated and furnished in contemporary style, with tiles and paintings by Burne-Jones and Morris' firm, Morris and Company. The same year he published a volume of "English Landscapes," with text by Tom Taylor...

“Herald Square at Lunch Time”
Located in Southampton, NY
Original screen print which would be considered a silkscreen or serigraph of a birds eye view of Herald Square in New York City at lunch time by the contemporary American artist, Jacqueline Fogel. Edition 3/15. Signed in lower right margin by the artist. Executed in 1988. Condition is excellent. Currently unframed. Professionally matted. Overall matted measurements are 14 by 11 inches. Framing options are available. Provenance: A Venice, Florida collector. This park was named for the newspaper that was once published directly to its north. The City of New York acquired the area in 1846 as part of the opening of Bloomingdale Road (now Broadway). By the early 20th century, many printers and publishers had located in the area. The New York Herald, founded by James Gordon Bennett in 1835, was best known for its sensational coverage of scandal and crime, and for its enormous circulation. Herald Square's centerpiece monument to Bennett and his son houses a sculpture and clock that formerly topped the Herald building. The bronze figures include Minerva, the goddess of wisdom and invention, and two bell-ringing blacksmiths. The clock and figures were installed on the monument in 1940, and blacksmiths "Stuff and Guff" or "Gog and Magog" have chimed the hours Born Oct. 13, 1928, in Brooklyn, as a child she showed a great interest in drawing. She attended the Philadelphia School of Art and maintained a career as an artist throughout her life. Impressed by the native American art represented in Kachina dolls, she developed a personal style in her 20s that always incorporated bright colors. Her work ranged from land and cityscape watercolors to small to life-size polychrome sculptures made almost entirely from discarded ornate furniture parts and other found or collected objects. In 2000, she was given the opportunity to create cow sculptures for the New York Cow Parade, and in 2002 she painted sculptures for the Rescue Dog book honoring the working dogs from Sept. 11, 2001. In 2005, her Big Apple sculpture was displayed outside Trump Tower. She swam regularly in Jamaica Bay and maintained an active and vibrant lifestyle throughout her life, attending many parties, art exhibits and concerts. Fogel's multifaceted planes which should recede far into the distance and give the illusion of depth because of their tonality and color intensity appear, instead, to be on the same plane. Because the depth of field is flattened, the color areas become rather decorative. In addition, the planes on the buildings are charmingly tilted and destorted, contributing to the zaniness and gaiety of these paintings. Fogel has a graceful sense of composition and her placement of shapes is always sound. The paintings, while they seem so effortless and unselfconscious, belie an unobtrusive and playful artistic intelligence. Fogel enjoys dealing with visual paradoxes in a natural, unforced and unselfconscious manner. Shop her watercolor art for sale online. Rare Hand Colored "Cabane Des Hold" - 1st Ed "Description de l’Univers" C. 1683
By Alain Manesson Mallet
Located in Soquel, CA
Rare Engraving "Cabane Des Hold, Terres Artiques, Fig CII," 1st edition "Description de l’Univers, page 281 This rare image depicts the Willem Barentsz expedition of 1597 to Novaya Zemlya, Russia. The engraving, with later hand-coloring, shows the cabin and ship of the Dutch arctic expedition of Barentsz on Novaya Zemlya (Nova Zembla), with the party being attacked (and in some cases apparently eaten) by bears and wolves. Dutch explorer, Willem Barentsz, reached the west coast of Novaya Zemlya in 1594, and in a subsequent expedition of 1596 rounded the northern point and wintered on the northeast coast. Barentsz died during the expedition, and may have been buried on the northern island. This artwork is a page from a book by 17th century cartographer and engineer, Allain Manesson Mallet (French, 1630-1706), "Description de L'Univers, contenant les differents systêmes du monde, les cartes générals et particulières de la géographie ancienne et modern." “Paysage a Auvers”
By Paul Cézanne
Located in Southampton, NY
Etching by Paul Cezanne printed in 1914 from the original plate executed in 1873. In very good original condition and beautifully matted and framed. Overall framed measurements are 16 by 12 inches. 1873 /1914 Technique: etching in a dark-brown black sepia ink Image Size: 5 1/4 x 4 3/8" platemark Signature: unsigned as usual Edition Size: total of 600, (400 with this wove paper) Reference: Cherpin 5; Venturi 1161 Paper: buff wove State: second of 2, after burnishing of the scratch in the upper right Publisher: Bernheim-Jeune in "Cezanne" Description "Paysage a Auvers" was published posthumously in Paris in 1914 in an edition of 600 total impressions by Bernheim-Jeune for inclusion in their publication "Cezanne". Early proofs done in 1873, with the scratch in the upper right corner, are rare. None were signed by Cezanne. The subject of this image is allegedly the only etching Cezanne did that roughly related to the composition of one of his paintings, with the same title, the entrance into a farm on the rue Saint-Remy. Cezanne gave the painting to Camille Pissarro as a gift. Cezanne created a tension in this small composition by the use of a slanting tree and a horizontal, deeply bitten fence and farmhouse and letting the image drift away to the distance. This impression has strong printed lines...

“Montmartre et la Basilique du Sacre Coeur”
By Jean Dufy
Located in Southampton, NY
Colored lithograph on arches paper of Montmartre and Sacre Coeur by the well known French artist, Jean Dufy. Signed in pencil lower right. Published by Guilde de la Gravure, Paris. Edition size lower left in pencil 75/250. Condition is very good. Provenance: Huntington, Long Island estate. Sight size is 21 by 26.5 inches. Sheet size 22 by 30 inches. Presently unframed. Jean Dufy was born into a large family, the seventh of eleven children. He spent his childhood in Le Havre and it was here that he and his brothers and sister were fortunate to be influenced by their father’s passion for music, a theme that was to become prominent in his work. After completing school, his father, an accountant in a metallurgic company, placed Jean in an import company, holding the position of “commis de dehors”, a clerk. That gave him the opportunity to spend most of his time in the exhilarating atmosphere of the harbour, memorising all these sensations in his sketchbook, filling page by page with drawings of ships in all sizes loading and offloading merchandise from far away countries. Raoul Dufy, Georges Braque and Othon Friesz, assisted by the Parisian art dealer Georges Aubry, organised an exhibition in 1906 at the Town Hall in Le Havre to encourage the people of the city to appreciate Modern Art. It was this exhibition that included masterpieces by leading artists such as Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, André Derain, Albert Marquet and others who inspired the young Jean Dufy, particularly Matisse and his extraordinary use of light. He took a job as a secretary on the ocean liner “La Savoie”, crossing the ocean to New York City for nearly two years. After he completed his military service between 1910 and 1911, he settled in Paris in 1912. At this stage he painted mainly flowers in watercolour...
