Ferreras Green Velvet with Dalmatian, Vienna, 1956 – Miguel Ferreras' lustrous velvet suit was photographed with a Dalmation in the doorway of Vienna's Hotel Bristol for the August 13, 1956 issue of LIFE. The Dalmatian's history is as numerous and varied as its spots. The breed originated in Croatia but quickly found its way to Europe, especially England; it has been a bird dog, a trail hound, a retriever, and a hunter of both large and small game. The Dalmation's most recent and best known talent has been as a carriage dog; running in front of the horse drawn carriages of the elite and fire brigades alike, paving the way and guarding for danger. This talent, along with it's flexible temperament, lead to its continued use in Fire Companies to this day. The Dalmatian is emblematic of service in moments of emergency. These boldly crafted archetypes inhabit an imagined macro-family album, offering a unique perspective on portraiture, connection, and community. Shawn Theodore (b. 1970) was born in Germany to American parents from Philadelphia, and currently lives and works in Philadelphia. Theodore was awarded the prestigious PDN’s 30 New & Emerging Photographers to Watch (2019), the Getty Images / ARRAY ‘Where We Stand’ grant, and a grant from the Knight Foundation for ‘A Dream Deferred’. Theodore was a two-time nominee for the Pew Center for Arts & Heritage Fellowship and a nominee for the Magnum Foundation Fund. He is an Associate Adjunct Professor at the University of the Arts, a trustee of The Print Center, a trustee of the Rush Philanthropic Arts Foundation, and a former trustee of the Philadelphia Photo Arts Center.
Theodore was announced as a two-time nominee of The Pew Center for Arts & Heritage Fellowship and a nominee of the Magnum Foundation Fund in 2018. In the following years 2019 and 2020, he was awarded the PDN's 30 New & Emerging Photographers to Watch and AI-AP American Photography 35. He has had several solo exhibitions and is included in several group exhibitions. MODERNISSIMO series
Modernismo was conceived between 2012 and 2014 as a series of pure photography, marrying elements of the historical pop art movement and raw, undulating forms of the human body. Patterns become the focal point as lines of the body become the canvas. Rooted in high fash- ion, Modernismo celebrates optical illusion coupled with vibrant color, within a unique and malleable interpretation. Bekor focused on creating a series of intrigue and minimalism, working with classical elements of black and white photography and playing on the vulnerabilities of his subject matter. Images composed of unique lighting, contrasting colors, and bare skin evoke drama and sensuality within the series.

For Giuliano Bekor, a photograph is an image that comes into being consciously, composed of light, color, space and form. Like a painter, he sketches, refining ideas through pen and pencil well before the shutter clicks. A camera is strictly a means to an end, a way of making a palpable visual record of an idea that gestates in his mind, gains shape by his hand, and resolves through his eye as it peers through the lens.
His subject is the human body, almost always nude. These images delve into the splendor of the body - how it can express the inner meaning of who we are. Limbs, torsos, muscles and bones are exposed as though carved out of a supple, glowing stone that flexes and twists. Rare 1979 Photograph of Jean Michel Basquiat
This rare Basquiat photograph was taken from Nicholas Taylor’s well-documented portfolio exploring his friendship with Jean-Michel Basquiat - a friendship which began when both collaborated on the historic New York No Wave band, “GRAY” in the late 1970s; before the two briefly lived together in the East Village. Selections from Taylor's portfolio were most notably exhibited as part of the Basquiat retrospective at London's Barbican in 2017 and have been featured in numerous noteworthy publications on Basquiat.

Whilst Basquiat often provided glimpses into his conflicted character through his own art, Taylor’s photograph offers an intimate, and perhaps more honest, portrait from the outside. The clever exploration of light and dark reveals the dichotomies that divided the artist; both his fragile and playful, tender and brazen sides are unveiled. A soft glow is cast across Basquiat’s face, communicating a tenderness and affection that only a close friend could capture.
About Nicholas Taylor
Nicholas Taylor (American, b. 1953) is a renowned photographer and musician. Taylor moved to New York in 1977 to pursue a career as a photographer and it was through the vibrant New York art scene that he came to know the young artist, Jean-Michel Basquiat. It was, in fact, his intimate portfolio of photographs documenting his friendship with Basquiat that rocketed Taylor to fame. The two would collaborate in the seminal No Wave band “Gray” and live together in the East Village, before Taylor launched a successful career as a DJ famous for track-looping. His track “Suicide Mode” would later be used in the soundtrack for Julian Schnabel’s 1996 film “Basquiat." Taylor has been directly referenced in at least two works by Basquiat and is responsible for first introducing the artist to Madonna before the two dated.
