Downtown Apartment

Apartment by Amy Lau Design in New York, NY

The clients’ art collection was the inspiration for this beautiful Chelsea loft, particularly a small painting by artist Rex Ray. Using soft white as a backdrop to showcase their art, I made this space an echo of a gallery, ultimately resulting in a telling study of biomorphism in 20th Century design.

Sculptural furnishings, contemporary art, graphic elements and riots of color are all tamed, edited and emphasized through modernist style. Unique pieces, such as an installation of twelve sconces by lighting designer David Weeks, are perfectly balanced with the surroundings, losing none of their individual appeal.

A remarkable collection of Vladmir Kagan furniture dominates this New York loft, however, it was the client’s passion for hand blown glass, supple shape and bold color that creates the assertive undertones. The colorful glass chandelier in the dining area was a perfect nod to the clients' love for art, and their ever growing collection, serving as the perfect dialog between art and interior design.
